Product Description

Fahrenheit 451 (1966) was François Truffaut's highly stylised adaptation of Ray Bradbury's dystopian science fiction classic, a vision of a future in which firemen burn books. Herrmann wrote music for strings, harp and percussion, a gracefully chill, urgently rhythmic portrait of a sterile world. The finale, "The Road", blossoms into one of Herrmann's finest melodies, a heartbreakingly lovely homage to the indominability of the human spirit. The expanded suite of 10 selections was specially realised for this album. The Man In The Grey Flannel Suit (1956) and Tender Is The Night (1962) are rare Herrmann gems, achingly lovely melodies aptly presented beside the more famous and utterly captivating "Andante Cantabile" from The Ghost And Mrs Muir (1947). The suite from Anna And The King Of Siam (1946) marks one of Hollywood's earliest ventures into world music, with Herrmann extensively researching Siamese music before composing this glittering, majestic and deeply imaginative work.

The only real criticism of this lovingly produced album is the 34 minute-running time: Esa-Pekka Salonen's Herrmann anthology, also features a recording of the Fahrenheit 451 suite, and may serve as a more extensive introduction to Herrmann's music, though serious Herrmann fans will adore the rarities also available here. --Gary S. 5.0 out of 5 stars Herrmann is outdoing the Divine 28 May 1999
By shampanier@actcom.co.il - Published on Amazon.com

This soundtrack joins the top of the top of Herrmann's masterpieces, music scores like "Vertigo" & "Marnie". Bernard Herrmann composed beautiful music to match with Truffaut's vision of "Fahrenheit 451". This soundtrack consists of various qualities; the dynamic & thrilling "Fire Engine" is followed by "The Bedroom" - one of the most beautiful and divine pieces I've ever heard. This duel of fire & fantasy ends in "The Road" - A new height for perfectness, with "one of those moments" that pierce the heart. Herrmann is simply outdoing the divine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Herrmann's score is wonderful! 16 Sep 2004

Why is Amazon placing film reviews here?

Herrmann's score for Truffaut's fine film is brilliant. Lyrical, mysterious, propulsive. Full of pathos, beauty, hope. It is, simply, a wonderful score. On this disc, we are presented with a good represenatation of the score. More would have been better. But what is here is very well conducted by McNeely. Half the disc is the 451 score. The other half, a selection from some less frequently heard Herrmann scores. Think of this disk as a Herrmann sampler. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good, but it ain't the Original 4 Sep 2002

Something is lost in this translation; one is advise to find the out-of-print 1974 London Phase 4 recording, THE MYSTERIOUS FILM WORLD OF B.H. as conducted by Maetsro, himself. It includes F451 in all it icy beauty as it was heard in the underrated film of 1966. It also includes 7TH VOYAGE and DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, and the fidelity is SUPERB.

But as rerecordings go, yes, this is a good one.
