At last! Vanessa Carlton has produced an album that sounds as though she has progressed and matured since her last release. Please understand that, by saying this, I am not completely slating her 2 previous albums, BE NOT NOBODY and HARMONIUM, I am merely saying that HEROES AND THIEVES shows the kind of progression from a young lady, growing and developing into her talent. Although Vanessa's piano playing has never been questioned - it is impeccable - HARMONIUM disappointed me slightly because I felt that the lyrics let the incredible music down.
HEROES AND THIEVES sees Vanessa still maintianing her amazing standards on the ivory keys, yet I feel that the songs have a much maturer sound to them than those on HARMONIUM, her second album. From tracks such as "Come Undone", where she highlights that "there are people in this lifetime that we should never meet", to tracks like "Fools Like Me" where she warns that "the dreamers get punished most by truth", demonstrates a new insight into life and the workings of the human heart.
A very accomplished album - I hope that this progression continues and then her fourth release should be breathtaking!
