Product Description

Amid the ruins of a Germany defeated in war, a Wehrmacht officer Robert Fischer attempts to win back his soul. At the same time, his feelings are shaped by the guilt he feels towards a Jewish academic, who he serves as a jailor to, and the love he feels for a young nurse.

A stunning debut, written in the tradition of the great Russian novels of Lermontov and Turgenev, A Hero of Our Time is both a tragic love story and also a story of redemption.

A Hero of Our Time is an elegant and arresting novel which will keep the reader engaged to the very last line.

'An elegant novel which is awash with both hope and tragedy. A Hero of Our Time is a must read for anyone interested in WWII or 19th Century Russian Literature.'
(Nigel Jones, author of Countdown To Valkyrie)

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylish and Powerful. 20 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The original A Hero Of Our Time, by Lermontov, is one of my favourite novels of all time so I was curious to read what I thought might be a re-telling of that book set in WWII. Although there are shades of Lermontov's Pechorin in Robert Fischer, Foreman's A Hero Of Our Time is a different book entirely.
Yet the novel is no worse for not being a pastiche or homage to Lermontov's masterwork. This book has a charm, wit and philosophy all of its own. The supporting characters, in the form of Jakob Levin and Charlotte Friedrich, are strong - and the ending is one of the most gripping I have read in a long time.
Stylish and powerful. One of my novels of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned - Yet A Possible Future Classic. 20 Feb 2012
By Abi
Format:Kindle Edition
Although this novel is old fashioned in many ways, in terms of its themes and Byronic central character, it is because of its old fashioned virtues that it could prove a classic in the future. There are conscious echoes of references to Lermontov's original masterpiece - and other nineteenth century novels - but one can read A Hero Of Our Time without a knowledge of those books, or a knowledge of Germany at the end of the war.

Although there are frequent moments of wit and wryness in this book - particularly in the dialogue - one should be aware that it's quite a sad book. The love story is a tragic love story.

A Hero Of Our Time may not be the best book you read this year (as with other debut novels it's not without some flaws) but Robert Fischer will probably be the most memorable character that will stick in your mind for awhile - whether you find yourself attracted or repulsed by him.
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Moving 19 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A Hero of Our Time far surpassed my expectations, especially for a debut novel. Set during WWII, Richard Forman focuses on the perspective of Robert Fischer, an reluctant German Nazi officier. This rare outlook pulled me deeper into the narrative and though I loved him and hated him at times, Robert always held me raptly in attention. I could not help being affected by the depth of his vulnerability and the ambiguity of his redemption pressed me on until the final page. Filled with subtle literary references from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the novel brings pleasure to those familiar with period's classics. Foreman's delicate crafting of Robert's interactions with the captive Jakob and the vibrant Charlotte provides a truly beautiful portrayal of human relationships. It is this timeless and tragic depiction of human psychology that causes the novel to surpass the status of simple wartime story to be a vastly compelling and enriching read. The power behind the ending and the strong silhouette of the characters lingers with you long after you've finished the last paragraph. Absolutely recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile (but far from author's best work)
Not the author's best work, either in terms of being as entertaining as his Roman books or as well written as Warsaw, but A Hero of Our Time still gripped me in parts. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent literary fiction.
More than decent war story, which is also a tragic love story. Author is conscious of his hero being a literary descendant of protagonists of great Russian novels. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars A different perpective
The hero of the story is a man who has kept on the right side of the Nazi party by not seeing what they are doing to the Jews.

3.0 out of 5 stars A hero of our time
I chose it as a historical novel but it's more of a romance set in some obscure time and place. Tedious story line with fanciful language and a smattering of poetry. Read more
