5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, 26 Jun 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hero and the Crown (Paperback)
The Hero & The Crown was my introduction to McKinley, and what an introduction. Although I have loved every book of hers I have read (and own most of them) Aerin will always hold a special place in my heart.

Anyone who has ever felt out of place in their surroundings, who has ever felt awkward or unloved, will relate to the gawky cuckoo with the wry sense of humour that is Aerin. She commits heroic deeds with no equipment and in the most unheroic and heedless fashion, plunging headlong into things she is convinced she will fail, and endears herself to the reader along the way.

Not many writers are able to write such a flawed and human character amid such a tapestry and make her so unforgettable. If you never read another McKinley novel, READ THIS ONE and you will be equally hooked!

4.0 out of 5 stars Aerin - My kind of Gal!, 21 Oct 2002
'The Hero and the Crown', was the second book of Robin McKinley's that I chose to read, ('The Blue Sword' being the first). This book brought the reader into the world of Aerin, who was mentioned in 'The Blue Sword'. R McKinley once again wrote about a young woman who was special in her own way; not because she was beautiful, or popular, but because she had the determination to take what she had been given, and prove she was just as good as anyone else. Maur and Agsded,'the baddies', were described in such a way that you could see the beauty in them, despite the fact that they were both born out of pure evil, and Luthe, he was brought to life in a manner that was lacking in 'The Blue Sword'. When oh when are you going to write another book about Damar, Robin?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hero and the Crown, 9 Mar 2005

This review is from: Hero and the Crown (Paperback)
Aerin does not fit in with the royal family of Damar. Even though she is the daughter of the king, she does not manifest the "Gift". This gift is a kind of magic - a birth gift for the few and privileged.

Even without such a gift Aerin manages to make a life for herself as a dragon hunter. The North becomes more aggressive towards Damar, and Damar has to prepare for war. Aerin becomes involved in this effort, though not in the usual manner. The possibility of some gift being present in her certainly seems to be indicated as the book evolves.

I would say that "The Hero and the Crown" is a romantic fantasy. Perhaps it has been classified as a young adult book because there is no explicit sexual content. While not a deeply intellectual book, this book is certainly an entertaining read.
