Hero Builders Guide - a good choice for new players, 12 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Hero Builder's Guidebook (Dungeons & Dragons) (Paperback)
There have been several bad reviews of this book, but personally, I do not think they do this product justice. The Hero Builder's Guide is an excellent book if you are quite new to DnD - it helps you get to grips with the different races and classes, helping you to make your character unique. It comes with several ideas on how to make your character your own, an alignment test (particuliarly useful for those who face alignment restrictions, like Paladins and Barabarians), even a wide range of tables to help create your won personal history (worth buying just for this!!!). Although experienced players may not get much of a boon from this book, I strongly reccommend it for players (and DMs too) who want to make their characters a little special.

Covers without content, 5 Sep 2003
This review is from: Hero Builder's Guidebook (Dungeons & Dragons) (Paperback)
This book has a pretty good name, I grant them that. The problem is with the contents: this book doesn't offer anything to anyone who has been playing DD before. I wouldn't even advice beginners to buy it as it certainly is not worth the money. Someone summed this book up nicely as "The worst DD publication so far." I do not understand how this book can have a 3 star rating: 3 stars means after all that this would be a book of average quality and this is not that. I have been playing RPGs 15 years and during that time I have played with many different rulesets. Among all those RPG books I have read this one has perhaps the least content.

Not very useful if you have any gaming experience, 18 Nov 2001
This review is from: Hero Builder's Guidebook (Dungeons & Dragons) (Paperback)
First, the contents by chapter:
-Rolling Your Ability Scores: does a short analysis on 4d6 method and hot to place the scores. Even new players shouldn't have any difficulties with this concept. Most of this informatoin is very uninteresting and pretty useless except for one Powerplay sidebar.
-Choosing Your Race And Class: gives a lot of starting packages. Explains what feats, skills and equipment to get. Some are conversions from 2e kit books. If you're low in imagination, they can be useful, if not, they still can (but are less likely to be). Example - Dwarven Barbarian: Battlerager(Variant). Battlerager was a pretty interesting kit from old Complete Book of Dwarves.
-Creating Your Personal History:...what? Tables to roll in instead of advice? Actually usable, but makes character generation a mechanical work instead of creative one. Is probably useful for a DM.
-Selecting An Alignment: also has tables, namely a test to choose which alignment is best for you. I find aligment pretty poor a concept. The concept of Aligment crosses Michael Moorcock's ideas of Law and Chaos with traditional Christian values - and fails, creating a mess. Alignment is also a rule that is hard to dispose of as so many spells and items deal with it. So the test is a good way to find a suitable alignment.
-Planning Your Future Career: has packages like The Ultimate Archer, Swashbuckler. Helps you build an archetypal character without the help of prestige classes.
Summary: If you have little gaming experience and want to make the most of 3rd edition core books (PHB, DMG, MM) then this is a good book, although after some time playing you may wish to dispose of it. Experienced gamers will find little of use in here.
