Book Description

One of the great classics of spiritual literature brought back into print

Product Description

Paul Brunton was one of a very small number of his generation to travel so extensively throughout India and Tibet at a time when very few were doing so with such insight and discernment. His journalistic skills produced magnificent descriptions of the snowy peaks and high-desert landscapes of the Himalayan region, but it was the lessons he learned from the holy men he met on his journey that transformed him into one of the great interpreters of the East. In this magnificent classic he explains that we all need 'oases of calm in a world of storm', no matter what era we are living in, and that to retreat from our everyday lives for a while is not weakness but strength. By taking the trouble to discover the deep silence within us we will find the benefits of being linked to an 'infinite power, an infinite wisdom, an infinite goodness'. A Hermit In The Himalayas is a fascinating blend of travel narrative and profound spiritual experience. As we accompany the author on his journey through the vast Himalayas ranges towards Mount Kailas in Tibet, he also shows us an even more remarkable - and timeless - inner path which will help us cope with the ups and downs of our contemporary world. Inspiring. 14 Dec 2005
Format:Paperback
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Paul Brunton's book A search in secret India, I have researched and eagerly read other books written by the same author. A Hermit in the Himalayas is a real treasure. The descriptions of nature are truly stunning & so visually rich that whilst reading, one can easily picture the described landscapes. His style of writing, whilst from another era, is accessible, intelligent & extremely stimulating. I particularly love his shared moments of insight & meditation. He was an interesting man and his books are , in my opinion, wonderful. His discourse on Charlie Chaplin, although not from our time, is timeless truth, as are all his observations. He was certainly a man who had the courage to share his inner self & the ability to do so coherently. I recommend this book to anyone searching their own sacred paths & to those interested in reading about the great seekers of enlightenment in our time.

A truly absorbing, beautiful little book that takes you into the very heart of the tranquility of the Himalayas at a time before the conquest of Everest.

This is Paul Brunton's journel of his time in search of stillness; the inner silence of a higher state meditation. It is a book full of insight and wisdom as he pens his daily musings on life and Nature with beautiful, vivid descriptions of a time spent surrounded by breathtaking beauty.
He is a philospher talking of many things, travel, politics, religion, a chapter in which he replies to his correspondence and, in answer to a man on the brink of suicide, a letter so uplifting and full of compassion that it touched my heart. Another on silent movies and Charlie Chaplin, that lovable funny character of the silent era.

I loved this little book, only 192 pages - but it has a very big heart!

Inspiration for All Times 13 Aug 2010
By Nanci Rose-Ritter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Paul Brunton was one of the first Westerners to gain direct access to some of the remotest spiritual heritages of the world. His in-depth writings, remarkable for their insights into Eastern philosophies, gained great respect in the early part of the 20th century. Not only did Brunton speak from profound personal experience but he put into Western terminology the most esoteric concepts from the East; and he continued these writings into the later part of the century. But it was his early journals (such as this one), filled with reflections, eye-opening stories and deep understandings, which capture the essence of the young Brunton while traveling, before India started losing so much of its endearingly isolated character. Anyone with a love of the Himalayas, who is either fascinated by its spiritual possibilities or has actually been in those rugged, phenomenal mountains, should read Paul Brunton's HERMIT IN THE HIMALAYAS. The book will help you find yourself, just as all his writing do. PB, as he's known by those who read his many books, has been a major inspiration throughout my life. And he always will be.
