A sumptuous celebration in words and photographs of the fascinating riches of heritage fruits and vegetables. Published in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society and presented by season for growers and seasonally minded cooks, this book introduces heritage fruits and vegetables in entertaining stories and beautifully composed photographs that highlight all the unusual colours, shapes and textures of heritage varieties in a painterly way. It offers full descriptions of each type of fruit and vegetable and includes stories about their origins, development, the reception they received upon introduction to various countries, as well as the folklore associated with them. Very disappointed in this book - expected more research into available heritage cultivars and their date of appearance. There are lots of lovely photographs but not much substance in the text. E.g. section on potatoes is only 6 pages and 3 of those are photographs! The book only mentions a handful of heritage potatoes - varieties such as Arran Pilot, Duke of York, British Queen are not mentioned. The book is too shallow so will sell it on. I think that the "Heligan Vegetable Bible" or "Forgotten Fruits" are far better buys than this - it may be suitable for beginners who like lots of pictures and not too much text.

4.0 out of 5 stars incredible photography 15 Jun 2012
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER

This is a sumptuous book. The cover is cloth bound and has an expensive feel. Open the book and you are lured in by Clay Perry's incredible photographs inspired by the still life paintings of the old masters. This is a stroke of genius. It does, however steal the show. This is a different kind of fruit and veg book for the thoughtful gardener, who is interested in heritage vegetables. You'll spend much the gazing at the images. There is not too much depth and not all heritage vegetables are included, but it is a beautiful book. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's garden blog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 24 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A truly sumptuous book. Stunning photographs illustrate a perfect balance of factual information and anecdotes about our disappearing but rich heritage in fruit and vegetables. The humblest of vegetables never looked so beautiful! Divided into seasonal sections, a reminder of the diversity of traditional varieties and the pleasure of indulging in fresh produce according to the time of year. Highly recommended.
