Between 1957 and 1959, Specialty (London American in the UK) released 3 Little Richard albums, "Here's Little Richard", "Little Richard Volume 2" and, "The Fabulous Little Richard". As was the habit at the time they were essentially comprised of current or future singles and flip sides plus odd studio material that hadn't made the grade . This is the first of those albums.
Every track is a bona fide Rock'n'Roll classic. This is the creme de la creme. Richard was the guy everybody copied. You name them, from Presley on down, every other rocker you can think of produced versions of Penniman hits. But did anyone better Richard? Well no, there were interesting variants e.g. the Everly Bros, "Lucille" but Richard was never eclipsed.
Although there had been outrageous stars before, Presley again, being the key example, Little Richard was way beyond absolutely anyone. That comes through very strongly in the music which hits from the first note. Not only was it that wonderful voice, seemingly out of control and well on its way to orgasm, but there was also the marvellous driving band. At the time I, and probably others, assumed this was a crack squad put together purely for Richard but in reality this was merely the usual New Orleans session guys who regularly backed Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis etc. Nor was it the studio, Cosimo Matassa's, that was responsible for the increased energy level. Domino and co. also used Cosimos. Perhaps it was Bumps Blackwell, the producer who brought the extra ingredient.
Whatever, just buy it.
