This was written a few years ago as word processors were just being introduced into offices and many feared they would mean less jobs for women working as typists, secretaries etc.
Antonia and Catherine meet while registering for work in a temping agency called "Here Today". Antonia has been a temporary secretary all her life, Catherine is a middle class woman looking for office work after redundancy. Antonia likes not being committed to being a temp, whereas Catherine soon looks to unionise the women working like this for better pay and conditions. Reluctantly, Antonia becomes involved.
But life takes a very disturbing turn for both women, and they are forced to reexamine their preconceptions.
This is a very funny book. The plot is strange but the characters are brilliant, and although computers have changed temping, the description of the attitudes of those who run temping agencies is still very accurate now.
Also of interest to those who enjoyed Serena Mackesy's book "The Temp"
