Product Description

Synopsis

Here is New York was founded in response to the events of September 11, and to the flood of images that resulted from it. The idea was simple: to present images of the event by as many different people and from as many different perspectives as possible. In the days following September 11, the organisers asked for pictures and were inundated with slides, negatives, prints, and digital files from photographers of every description, not only top photojournalists and other professionals, but rescue workers, firemen, cops, school children, and amateurs of every kind. In order to underline that it was the images themselves that mattered, rather than their makers, the photographs were all digitally scanned, printed out in exactly the same format, and hung from wires without attribution nor frames in a Prince St store front. The book Here is New York will be the most comprehensive and authentic document of what occurred. It will bear witness to what seemed unimaginable, memorialize the people who perished and the rescue workers who served so heroically.

Most of all, the book will be a testimony of people speaking directly to each other about their fears, their emotions, and their desire for community. This desire is one of the strongest by-products of the horrible events of September 11th. It is also what distinguishes Here is New York from any and all other books about the event.

September 11th is one of those dates that we will always remember, this book is a collection of about a 1000 or more photographs taken in New York by the professional and the amateur alike on and after September 11th 2001.
The pictures on each page are shocking and insightful images of emotion, pain and hope from the initial attack to the clean up of ground zero, to the funerals and kerb side vigils.
'Here is New York' is a book that is well presented, no unnecessary captions or dialogue just page after page of images that will stir your emotions and shock you.

Being a photographer I was particularly interested to look at this book. It didn't disappoint and it is certainly well worth its cover price. It aptly covers the tragic event from every conceivable angle, from the average Joe on the street to the professionals photographic eye. It is beautifully presented and needs no text. The introduction to the book makes fascinating reading and is truly awe inspiring. It doesn't sensationalise, it just leaves you to take something from it. It touches your emotions and makes you value living for each day. A must have in anyone's collection.

Brilliant book. Don't fall into the mindset of thinking you're a voyeur by looking at this stuff. We're lucky to have the easy access to technology to capture these kind of disasters that we didn't have when the Titanic sunk, or London was being bombed in WWII. Some of these images will be invaluable as time passes. Looking at them is still raw and painfull, but for the sake of history I'm glad this book has been published.
