If you are asking me ( and lets face it you are not and thankyou) this e.p ( do people still make e.p's?) is the high water mark of Kevin Shields musical fireworks, it is truly innovative music, particularly in the case of the first track and the last track, the sound of 'to here knows when' is quite extraordinairy, its shifting surface is blistering and bursting with sounds that are very hard to place in terms of guitar parts ,bass line and so on, the drums are there at the bottom tip tapping away absurdly lightly when compared to the mountain of sound they hold in place (just), and the vocal part (s) are purposefully dense and elusive, although more often than not they ascend to the universally understood land of oooh, make no bones about it this is heady stuff, and surely yet to be beaten for envelope pushing in the slow to change world of guitar pop, sure other bands have played louder, punkier, more agressive music but most of that kind of thing wares itself out like so much explosive sequel cinema, yes you are angry!, yes you are noisy! well done! go away!.(And lets not mention the subsequent rise and rise of the indy mither ballad with strings shall we?good!) M.B.V ploughed a wonderful furrow where noise, distortion and guitar wizardry were welded together with a softness, vulnerability and excellent ear for melody that was and still is quite beyond their peers, moonsong the last track here, has always reminded me of a worm hole travelling sister of caroline no by the beach boys,Kevin Shields and co. came closer than anybody else to matching the sky scraping melancholy summer of Brian Wilson at his 66 peak than anybody else since. high praise, but have a listen if you havent.
