Product Description

Meet Garrett: 30-year-old computer geek, master of irrational optimism, and serial-kisser of women who (it turns out) don't like him that way. After three blurry years of business travel and inadvertent celibacy, Garrett is so ready for a serious relationship that he's a little bit dangerous. Inspired by a romantic near-miss on a flight home to Seattle, Garrett hurls himself into the deep end of the dating pool, determined to find happiness no matter how miserable it makes him. Too bad the women he falls for don't share his sense of urgency: Froot Loop sculptress April worries she's warping his personality, cynical attorney Corinne suspects he likes her too much, and upstairs neighbor Meryl just wants to be friends. Garrett refuses to give up though... well, at least until he does. But sometimes, after you've finally abandoned hope, you find that someone else hasn't given up on you. "With wit, heart and intelligence, Derek Gentry's Here Comes Your Man reminds readers that you never know what is around the next corner or on the next page. Those who enjoy Nick Hornby will devour this book." -Eileen Cook, author of Getting Revenge on Lauren Wood

Now, as a 24 year old you can imagine I've read a lot of stories about love and romance. But recently nothing has rocked my boat, in fact, nothing has even made me read on past chapter two. This, I anticipated, would be similar. In fact, I was quite prejudiced in thinking that because a man had written the story and was the narrative, I would change shortly after the third page.

BUT I was proven wrong. I loved Garrett, I know many IT consultants who are similar (if not, exactly) like him. I didn't like the nice-ness of it all, how the emotions Garrett went through, his experiences were a little distant. But, if you consider this in some depth, men have a harder time expressing their emotions and that rings true to a point in this story.

This story is a bit of a sob-fest, it's even a shout-out-at-the-book-in-horror-or-amusement-whilst-sitting-on-the-bus-or-train. And I was sad to put it down.

So, if you enjoy light hearted, jovial and a sweet romantic story - give this a read. I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to anyone who has a soft caramel centre.

I have recently got myself a kindle so I have been looking for good books to read and downloading lots of samples. I came across this one while looking for my next read and I have to say what a really great book.

In a nutshell it is about an IT Consultant who has been out of relationships for a few years due to extensive travelling for his job, he has a chance encounter with a women on one of his flights from a job and it triggers a turn of events that will push him to change his life for the better. The way it explores his relationships and his life makes you feel like you are right there.

I look forward to this authors next book.

Fresh and Funny! 10 May 2010
By cantare - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In his first book, "Here Comes Your Man", Derek Gentry delves into the psyche of its main character, Garrett, the IT guy who seems to be looking for love in all the wrong places but for the right reason. He is very lonely. Bordering on self-loathing and boyish innocence, while weighing heavily on the former, Garrett pursues a half dozen relationships only to discover that his desperate longing for something to happen with each one is evident and although he tries to hide it, he scares away most of the women he meets. His self-deprecation gets the best of him and he sinks into depressive states after the breakups.

All of the scenarios are humorously described and beautifully crafted by the author. His descriptions of Seattle and Victoria leave the reader wanting to run there to experience them. Although one might consider the book light reading, the author writes in such a literary style, one wonders why he has chosen these bizarre relationships as his topic.

Gentry is a gifted writer, a very self-aware, attentive to detail craftsman. Just when he has written a perfectly vivid description of a situation or person, he reaches beyond it, takes it to another level, and completely nails it. From the very beginning, the reader empathizes with Garrett to the point of self discovery.

"Here Comes Your Man" is a witty but deep study in human behavior of characters who are quirky, funny, sexy, outspoken, and ungrounded. They fail to understand Garrett who is probably the kindest and most loving person to enter their lives.

Great Read for the Lazy Days of Summer (or any other time) 3 May 2010

For all of us who can acknowledge those times when our enthusiasm finally overwhelmed our dignity. Here Comes Your Man is the perfect companion when you want to simply read a well-written and beautifully-constructed story of life. In this case, the life of Garrett- with all of its whirling, hip-shaking, arm-waving choreography that he really has no business attempting. My only disappointment was finishing the last page. A great read!

Love and friendship and Everything in Between 10 April 2010
By K. C. Frederick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In his deft debut novel, Derek Gentry explores the tangled, often tortuous and occasionally wonderful mess of relationships among thirty-somethings in our time. While Garrett Anderson, his hopeful and hesitant protagonist soldiers on, not always gracefully, his story is told with assurance, wisdom and charity by a writer in full command of his material. We're in Seattle as Y2K approaches, where techies, temps and frequent fliers connect in acts of love, friendship and everything in between. A good read with plenty of dead-on dialogue. Get it!
