Product Description

When Matthew Martin wins an unusual prize at a school raffle, his mother insists he get rid of it. Instead, Matthew secretly keeps his pet alligator, Albert, in a large pond in the backyard. Albert becomes an unusual accomplice in several adventures.

Then the bag of tools, and finally the man climbed out of the window and stepped to the ground. Except, instead of the ground, he stepped into Albert's wide-open jaws.

Matthew's Uncle Bob is a dentist and a practical joker. After pulling Albert's abscessed tooth, he decides to use the alligator in an exhibit at the dental show. Uncle Bob tells everyone that Albert is a stuffed alligator. But television reporter Nora Snively isn't so sure.

She was sure she had heard Albert burp, and she was sure she had a fabulous news story. If only she could prove it was alive and not stuffed.

Matthew and Uncle Bob know they have to keep Albert a secret, but they're not prepared for Nora Snively. Determined to discover the truth, Nora trespasses in the Martin's backyard.

"My class of fourth and fifth graders loved, Here Comes Albert." Mr. Eric Rise, Simons School, San Jose, California

Great kid's book! 6 Dec 2006
By Danielle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Really well written children's book. Each chapter could stand on it's own as a short story and the entire plot is filled with good lessons like loyalty to friends (even aligator friends) and taking an active role in learning by calling and consulting trusted adults that know more than you (like when Matthew Martin calls his uncle the dentist to learn more about his aligator's sick tooth, or when he calls his friend Bobby Tran's dad who is a vetrinarian at the zoo to ask a question about Albert's eating habits).
A entertaining adventure story of a boy and his secret pet 7 Mar 2007
By Katherine Bussey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an engaging tale of a boy with a most unusual, secret, forbidden pet who presents challenging problems that are imaginatively dealt with by the author.

Young boys particularly will enjoy the descriptions of the alligator; his home in the back yard; his eating habits and especially how he quietly saves the family jewels from a would-be thief. It's delicious.

The author shows a real understanding of young boys minds. His writing style is smooth and geared to the age without being overly simple. The story will hold the interest of the young person reading it and the adult who might read it to them.
An excellent chapter a day children's novel for the classroom. 23 Feb 2007
By Joel D. Naatus - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While reading this book to my fifth grade class in Jersey City, New Jersey, I could not stop thinking about Albert and Mathew Martin's life and comparing it to the students' lives in my class. The students in my class don't have much in common with Matthew on the surface, but as the story evolved the students could visualize about what it would be like to have a large pet alligator to protect them from the perils of their everyday lives.

This modern day tall tale seems to apply to everyone; from our common desire to have something bigger than life to protect them from the outside world and to have a family that confides and protects them, even in unusual circumstances.

A Surprisingly docile alligator is the perfect helper for an adventurous young boy and a character that students can grasp onto.

Joel Naatus Fifth Grade Teacher P.S. 28, Jersey City, NJ
