CD Description

2CD SET IN DELUXE DIGI-BOOK – THE BEST OF THE NEW ORLEANS SOUL STAR For many years the Ernie K. Doe was best known for the smash hit single Mother In Law, one of the biggest (if not the biggest) R&B singles ever to emerge from New Orleans. In recent years however, the use of Here Come The Girls in a series of UK TV adverts (and the Sugababes subsequent cover of the track) has reintroduced K. Doe to a mainstream audience. Both tracks were written and produced by the legendary producer Allen Toussaint, who K. Doe started working with in 1959 when he signed with the Minit label. He continued to work with Toussaint for many years (on the Minit, Instant and Janus labels) and the best of these recordings, along with other classic recordings are featured on this 2CD set, which is packaged in a deluxe digi-book. In addition to Mother In Law and Here Come The Girls, the set also features the classics Te Ta Te Ta Ta, A Certain Girl, I Cried My Last Tear and Hotcha Mama. The set also includes unissued tracks and the sought after self-titled 1970 album which Here Comes The Girls was lifted from.

Priceless music - questionable sonics 28 Nov 2011
By Luigi Facotti - Published on Amazon.com

Allen Toussaint's creative contributions to the music of New Orleans are legend, both as producer and as solo artist. Much of his early recorded output asa producer was released on the Minit/Instant labels the more familiar of which have been endlessly complied on EMI collections while later efforts in collaboration with Marshall Sehorn on Polydor, Sansu, Deesu, Tou-Sea, Amy, Josie, SSS, Janus, Volt, etc. have had limited - if any -exposure on CD with questionable sourcing on what has been available. In the present instance, there are some priceless recordings from Ernie K-Doe from his "Mother-In-Law" days to his celebrated re-emergence 7 years after his death in a UK TV ad with "Here Come The Girls". The sound quality on this set is very uneven - some tracks have studio chatter suggesting access to the original masters, some are very muffled while others are - mostly the Janus tracks - are excellent stereo. This is a great set musically with Hotcha Mama (Sansu, 1976) being a standout. Also included are the great 45s from the 60s - "A Certain Girl" and "I Cried My Last Tear". Allen Toussaint's innovative production shines throughout leading one to wonder when the output from this great musician - Lou Johnson, the present set, will be made available with proper care in mastering. There are rumors that accessing the master tapes from Mr. Seehorn is not easy (e.g. expensive) and this is compounded by the quality of the re-releases on Charly - surely one of the tackiest labels in this space - poor graphics, superficial liner notes and mastering quality that makes some of my 1928 blues 78s sound better. "Sehorn's Soul Farm" (Charly SNAD661CD) is even worse - with tracks directly copied from worn 45s. The notes on the present set are poorly proof read, printed in China (!!) and superficial. If Ace Records is a 10 on a scale of 1-10 for its mastering, Charly must rate a 3. Shame on "Executive Producer" Jean Luc Young. Hopefully the master tapes - if not destroyed by Katrina - will be remastered properly sometime in the future - with the promise of a properly complied, annotated and mastered Allen Toussaint boxed set
Actually sounds pretty good... 26 May 2012

After seeing the other review, I was expecting another digital disaster. This is nowhere near as bad as the other review makes it out to be. Which makes me wonder if he just wanted to complain about the Charly label. Of the almost 50 tracks on here, there are only a couple where the sound seems less than it could be. This is a really solid set that showed some of the dimensions of Ernie K-Doe and New Orleans music. K-Doe was quite a character (read the book!) and this is the best of his music.
