Allen Toussaint's creative contributions to the music of New Orleans are legend, both as producer and as solo artist. Much of his early recorded output asa producer was released on the Minit/Instant labels the more familiar of which have been endlessly complied on EMI collections while later efforts in collaboration with Marshall Sehorn on Polydor, Sansu, Deesu, Tou-Sea, Amy, Josie, SSS, Janus, Volt, etc. have had limited - if any -exposure on CD with questionable sourcing on what has been available. In the present instance, there are some priceless recordings from Ernie K-Doe from his "Mother-In-Law" days to his celebrated re-emergence 7 years after his death in a UK TV ad with "Here Come The Girls". The sound quality on this set is very uneven - some tracks have studio chatter suggesting access to the original masters, some are very muffled while others are - mostly the Janus tracks - are excellent stereo. This is a great set musically with Hotcha Mama (Sansu, 1976) being a standout. Also included are the great 45s from the 60s - "A Certain Girl" and "I Cried My Last Tear". Allen Toussaint's innovative production shines throughout leading one to wonder when the output from this great musician - Lou Johnson, the present set, will be made available with proper care in mastering. There are rumors that accessing the master tapes from Mr. Seehorn is not easy (e.g. expensive) and this is compounded by the quality of the re-releases on Charly - surely one of the tackiest labels in this space - poor graphics, superficial liner notes and mastering quality that makes some of my 1928 blues 78s sound better. "Sehorn's Soul Farm" (Charly SNAD661CD) is even worse - with tracks directly copied from worn 45s. The notes on the present set are poorly proof read, printed in China (!!) and superficial. If Ace Records is a 10 on a scale of 1-10 for its mastering, Charly must rate a 3. Shame on "Executive Producer" Jean Luc Young. Hopefully the master tapes - if not destroyed by Katrina - will be remastered properly sometime in the future - with the promise of a properly complied, annotated and mastered Allen Toussaint boxed set
