CD Description

The early 1960s was a thrilling time in music as the pop, rock n roll and vocal harmony sounds that had dominated the 50s offered up classic after classic; record sales soared to new heights transforming many British & American acts into house hold names all over the world. This superb 2CD compilation brings together 42 of the most memorable songs from the early 60s songs that still sound as fresh today as when they were first played over 40 years ago.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now That's What I Call Music 4 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Although I do keep in touch with more modern music, it's still great to hear some of the magical songs from the greatest era in pure POP music. The Everly Brothers get this double set off to a flyer (and finish it too) and there are some absolute gems from the likes of The Drifters, Bobby Darin (and it's NOT 'Mack The Knife' but 'Beyond The Sea'), Johnny Preston, Bobby Rydell, Roy Orbison, Sam Cooke, Bob Luman and Connie Francis.
Like any other era, the 60's had its fair share of dross as well, and while there are no real stinkers, there are a few 'novelties' from Tommy Steele, Lonnie Donegan, Bryan Hyland and The Avons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and cheerful 5 April 2013
By R. A. Caton TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I bought this in Sainsbury's for three quid because it had Johnny Preston's "Running Bear" on it. It also has a damn good selection from my favourite period, that time when the 50's were turning to the '60s, before psychodelia, before *Wilson* even, when the world was new, exciting, bursting forth from the past (oh yes, isn't it always when you are young) and not yet soiled by the cynicism of the white heat of technology and the destruction of the TSR2 and the British aerospace industry for the sake of Harold's special relationship with Lyndon B.

I bought it for the car, and it's darn good. Shall I bellyache about it? why yes, I shall. It's in stereo, which release copies of those discs way back then definitely were NOT. And amazingly, all the tracks are (P)2011! As my memory joins the rest of my failing corporeal parts I like to be reminded of just how long ago it was when I had a future to anticipate rathert than a past to be ashamed of (hem-hem)

But it's all good gear, wacker.

NOW lets have a compilation of those novelty songs and those instrumentals that I only have to hear before turning 5 again and bursting into tears for les temps perdu.

Buy it. If the others in the series are as good I'll buy those too!
