Format:Audio CD
I LOVE this album, both as a pick-me-up, and as a bit of nostalgia for my fave Disney movie of all time.
The highlights: this, unlike a lot of OST albums which only contain the vocal tracks, is the entire SCORE of the movie, with all the beautiful instrumental bits in between. I confess to usually skipping the instrumentals and getting straight to the jazzed-up vocals, but some of them are very effective and really evoke the images of the movie as you play them; some of the best include 'Oh Mighty Zeus', from where Herc meets and speaks to his dad for the first time in the epic temple scene, and 'Cutting the Thread', the absolutely heart rending piece played when Meg dies.
On a brighter note, this is an album just brimming over with energy. The Muses, who could only be an invention of Alan 'Little Shop Of Horrors' Menken, absolutely sparkle with my favourite tracks; the colourful opening, 'Long Ago...' and 'Gospel Truth 1/Main Titles' (which includes Charlton Heston's wonderful bit of narration at the beginning: 'You go girls...' They build up momentum from slow and attitude-filled to just exploding with song. What a way to start the album!
'Zero to Hero' is a number you just have to bounce along to, Susan Egan's duet with the Muses; the adorably contrary 'I won't say I'm in Love' is as sweet as it is in the movie, and the all-together choral of 'A Star is Born' is both cheerful and heartfelt. Special mention also goes to Michael Bolton's cover of 'Go The Distance' - I usually loathe Disney 'celebrity' cover versions with a passion, but this one is BEAUTIFUL - and keeps all the quiet sincerity of the movie track whilst adding a bit of power ballad 'oomph'. The extra lyrics areally moved me too; 'Down an unknown road to embrace my fate/ though that road may wander/ it will lead me to you...', 'I will search the world, I will face its harms/ til I find my hero's welcome waiting in your arms...'
And how could this album be complete without Danny DeVito's hilarious 'One Last Hope'. Major points to the guy for not using a voice double and singing his own material with all of Phil's grumpy flair - I love this track and am not ashamed to say I can sing along with every word!
To sum up, my favourite Disney flick of all time, and easily my fave Disney OST of all time; only The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Lion King can even come close. Great fun all around, and has all the heart and soul of the movie.

Absolutely love this soundtrack! One of the best disney have ever done, the Muses are excellent(; Plus all the extra inbetween songs and covers by other artists are amazing.

I LOVE IT! It's such a great album to sing aloong to loudly in the shower! It's like watching the movie all over again.
