Hercules DJ Control Air

Hercules DJ control AIR is the versatile, innovative digital DJ controller that lets amateur and beginner DJs get mixing right away: all you need is a computer, headphones and speakers, and you're ready to go.

Hercules has created an ensemble of intuitive, spectacular controls – generally only available to seasoned musicians – on a unique mobile control surface. Indeed, experienced musicians often choose to purchase a dedicated controller for each function, and are able to program a MIDI** map allowing their different controllers to coexist within a software application.

DJ Control AIR also features built-in audio outputs.
It all adds up to a great leap forward in the world of mixing.

Mixing Is In The Air

AIR stands for "Adjustment by InfraRed": this is a totally new control in terms of mixing consoles for computers.

An infrared proximity sensor, built into the unit, lets DJs control their choice of function, such as volume level or an effect, without touching the controller, simply by moving their outstretched hand above the sensor. The controller calculates the distance between the sensor and the hand, and converts it into a gradual MIDI command.
This AIR control function regardless of the ambient lighting, allows users to modulate software settings quickly and intuitively.
  • The infrared light beam projected towards the hand is invisible
  • The sensor captures the infrared reflection on the hand, and uses the reflection to calculate the hand’s distance
  • The reflection is the same in both daylight and low light conditions, allowing Air control to be used during the day, at night or in places with weak lighting
  • Air control functions with all flesh tones. The only incompatibility is the use of black gloves (as the infrared sensor would not be able to detect the reflection)

Let’s scratch and set the mood
Thanks to its two pressure-detecting jog wheels, DJ Control AIR is perfect for scratching. The jog wheels, each 10 cm in diameter, detect the pressure exerted by the user’s hand. In this way, the feeling when scratching is as natural as when scratching on a vinyl record or a CD turntable – ideal for learning and perfecting scratch techniques, just like on professional DJ hardware.

The jog wheels also allow for easy control of the pitch bend function, as well as browsing through playlists.

8 touchpads with progressive sensors
For users keen to control sounds with a minimum of gestures, like famous DJs do, Hercules has included 2 sets of 4 progressive pads. These pads transmit a command and its velocity, to control loops, samples or effects. Just tap your finger on a pad to play an effect, for example: the pad lights up when touched, and transmits not only the On/Off command, but a gradual command as well. This lets the user easily vary the attack of a sound sample, or its volume, or modulate the amplitude of an effect.
The backlit pads, along with the lighting on the other controls, allow for easy viewing even in low-light or dark conditions.

Pressure-detecting jog wheels

The jog wheels detect the pressure from the user’s hand. With scratch mode enabled, the jog wheels scratch when the hand’s weight is detected, and stop scratching when the hand’s weight is no longer detected. This allows the DJ to stop playback by pressing on the jog wheel and restart playback by lifting up his or her hand. Scratch by turning the jog wheel while pressing down, and stop scratching by lifting up his or her hand.

With scratch mode disabled, the jog wheels bend the pitch or browse within tracks when the jog wheels are turned, regardless of the pressure applied.

A VU meter that displays the beats
DJ Control AIR includes a VU meter displaying beats, composed of 2 lines of 4 LEDs. Each line displays the beats in a track, allowing DJs to see at a glance whether the beats are in sync, without having to look at their computer screen. In this way, the DJ can stay focused on the dancers: if the LEDs light up at the same time for both tracks, then the 2 tracks are synchronized – and this, of course, is the basis of all mixing.
Built-in audio for the mix and for previewing tracks
Finally, Hercules DJ Control AIR features 2 stereo audio outputs:
  • to play the mix over speakers: one 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack output.
  • to preview tracks on headphones: one 6.35 mm stereo jack output.
The controller is bundled with the DJUCED DJing software: a powerful application that lets you mix, sync and manipulate tracks, and add your own personal touch to the music with the sampler and the arranger, while providing an intuitive graphical interface, for use with Mac® and PC.

Hercules DJ control AIR is the versatile, innovative digital DJ controller that lets amateur and beginner DJs get mixing right away: all you need is a computer, headphones and speakers, and you’re ready to go.

I am from the era of the vinyl deck. Whilst I played a couple of nights in my youth at clubs I was more of a bedroom DJ.

After a few years of doing nothing I thought I might try my hand at this again but without having to spend a fortune!

After looking at a few different controllers I decided to go with the DJ AIr.

First was because of the software, which is actually very good, and its free!!! User face is simple enough and there are no upgrades you need to purchase unlike other DJ software.

It works great on my Mac and I also know it works well on PC or laptop as a friend of mine uses it. That said I will stress make sure you have more then the minimum requirements because if you don't the program can become laggy as the processor struggles, not so much with standard mixing but more with the advanced options on the programme.

The controller its self is compact which is great but at the same time I must highlight it is not to small that you are pressing buttons you didnt mean too.

The cross-fader is pretty sturdy and all the que levels do what they are supposed too. The sample pads work well especially when you synth the tracks. These work great on a drop and really change the sound of the track.

The turntables are great and feel solid. The que and play buttons do what they need to and the pitch button also does what it says on the tin.

I do find however if you great the tracks on beat unless you press the sync button that starts flashing blue the tracks tend to fall out of sync. That said once you have beat matched just press the sync button and the tracks stay locked.

All in all a great entry level DJ controller and one that is more then adequate for any bedroom DJ. I would go as far to say you could even use this at a party.

A must for anyone looking to start or for anyone looking to get back into it!!!

This is not for big scratching djs or slapping quick cross fade mixing but it's cheap and you can totally get a party going with it it's lightweight portable looks good and does the job and above all else it's fantastic for the money! One thing however the programme it comes with is okay for beginners but isn't that great if your used to other programmes although it is similar to traktor but not as slick, if you use other software or if you want to use this with virtual DJ you have to copy and paste new mappers into the settings of virtual DJ
YOU CANNOT JUST TAKE OUT THE BOX AND USE WITH VIRTUAL DJ
some settings need to be adjusted and mappers copied in!
Apart from the minor negatives this is a tidy little mixer, looks good, lightweight and totally worth the money..
.. What are you expecting for a £100-ish mixer
THUMBS UP!!!

This good item for home but also for club . the price is also acceptable but I was expecting an output much better than what we have here ; bcz it looks more professional with a RCA output for Mix. Very good design. I still can't find out to use or to play with the sensor, but hope will definitely find out how to.

I love my Hercules. Smaller than I imagined it to be, i find the size of it an advantage however because of its compact size everything is quick to hand and responds extremely fast. I've only used it a couple of times so far but can see me having a lot of fun with this very well put together piece of compact hardware. It has a fabulous array of goodies on board too. The packaged software "DJuced" is to me, the only let down. I've used so many different software packages over the last few years but for some reason this one just doesn't sit right. There are quite a few thing I would change about it, first and foremost the track selection control which just isn't slick enough for me. Love the hardware, not a great fan of the software.

I have been a professional DJ for 25 years and the DJ Hercules AIr used in combination with Virtual DJ is the best experience for mixing I have ever had. And the hand controlled filter is great fun!

Easy to set up and relatively easy to use, it just depends how much you want do with it. You can start with the basics from the initial set up and and play about with the decks to learn all the fancy stuff. Don't be put off by some of the YouTube videos, just keep messing about and you will begin to pick up what works and what doesn't. The free software is easy to use and is fine for starting out. All in all a great piece of kit for the price, well made and great fun.
