Book Description

3 April 2006
The gruesome death of Mrs McGinty provokes Superintendent Spence to seek the help of his old ally Hercule Poirot. The victim's young lodger has been found guilty and is due to hang. But, Spence is not convinced by the circumstantial evidence which influenced the verdict. So, at considerable personal discomfort, Poirot goes down to the sleepy village where the old lady lived and where, by chance, his good friend Ariadne Oliver is also staying. There, he alights upon his first and most crucial clue - a newspaper article on the present whereabouts of women implicated in notorious murder cases. Did Mrs McGinty have to die because she had identified one of her neighbours as a brutal killer? Is that killer still at large, and can Poirot and Ariadne act swiftly enough to save an innocent man from the gallows? Agatha Christie's intriguing mystery is dramatised with a full cast including Julia McKenzie and George Baker. John Moffatt stars as Hercule Poirot.

More About the Author

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having recently read of the death of John Moffatt who so expertly played M Poirot in numerous radio drama plays and serials I sat down with great interest to hear him in Agatha Christie's Mrs McGinty's Dead. I am reading the novels and stories and listening to the radio dramatisations and have found so far that all of them provide fine character studies and this serial is no exception. OK it also has 2 more personal favourites Julia McKenzie and the late George Baker. Originally broadcast in 2006 using a script by Michael Bakewell and with direction from regular Enyd Williams all of the many parts are brought to life both verbally and atmosphere wise. John Moffatt is the audio voice of Poirot and to think that he did this as his retirement from theatre acting is quite amazing. As with Agatha Christie there are plenty of red herrings but Poirot sees through them with the help or otherwise of Ariadne Oliver and conventional detective Spence. A real winner and 2 hours and a bit pass by very quickly but luckily you can press play and hear it all again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Even paced 14 Jan 2010

Another very good adaptation of a mid period Christie novel. This particular production is slower of pace than some of the others I've listened too - possibly a little too languid in places but its a very full and faithful telling of the story with no characters missed out as far as I can tell. I really like John Moffat as Poirot, a really subtle performance and its good to hear George Baker NOT sounding like Inspector Wexford as the investigating officer. I like Julia McKenzie very much as Ariadne Oliver but this is a rather more subdued outing than her previous appearances. Overall, very good but quite long.
