Book Description

15 Sep 2008

All 51 Hercule Poirot short stories presented in chonological order in a single volume – plus a bonus story not seen for more than 70 years.

‘My name is Hercule Poirot and I am probably the greatest detective in the world.’

The dapper, moustache-twirling little Belgian with the egg-shaped head, curious mannerisms and inordinate respect for his own ‘little grey cells’ has solved some of the most puzzling crimes of the century. Appearing in Agatha Christie’s very first novel in 1920 and her very last in 1975, Hercule Poirot became the most celebrated detective since Sherlock Holmes, appearing in 33 novels, a play, and these 51 short stories.

Arranged in their original publication order, these short stories provide a feast for hardened Agatha Christie addicts as well as those who have grown to love the detective through his many film and television appearances.

This new edition now also includes Poirot and the Regatta Mystery, an early version of an Agatha Christie story not published since 1936!

More About the Author

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

‘Little masterpieces of detection. Poirot and Agatha Christie at their inimitable best.’

About the Author

Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and became, quite simply, the best-selling novelist in history. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, written towards the end of the First World War, introduced us to Hercule Poirot, who was to become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Sherlock Holmes. She is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in 100 foreign languages. She is the author of 80 crime novels and short story collections, 19 plays, and six novels under the name of Mary Westmacott.

Format:Paperback
These short stories, many of which were first published in newspapers, are a joy to read. They are perfect holiday or bed-time reading as each story can be read in about 20-30 minutes. The little Belgian detective and his friend Hastings maintain their friendly banter as they do in the longer novels in which they appear and Japp makes several good appearances. As Christie herself notes in the introduction (taken from her autobiography), the three characters were based upon Holmes, Watson and the tetchy police chief Lestrade.

Obviosuly, the stories are not as complex, multi layered or multifaceted as the longer stories are and to see Poirot thrive more satisfyingly, you need to look to these, but the short stories manage to keep you guessing and wondering right up to the denouement. Some wonderful characterisations and dialogue as one would expect from Christie punctuates the cases Poirot faces.

In short, the book is a woinderful collection but I cannot help but feel a little less satisfied having read it than when I read some of her longer books. Nevertheless, Poirot fans the world over will love the opportunity it offers to see just a little more of the famous Belgian sleuth at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars At around 20p per story - you can't beat it! 31 July 2008
Format:Paperback
Being newly addicted to detective stories I bought this book for good value. At the price it works out at just over 20p per story. And since each is a short story, you don't need to bookmark any of them half-way through if you'd prefer to finish it. IMO it's the best possible introduction to Agatha Christie for anyone who hasn't read her before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Genius 26 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
If you've ever enjoyed a Poirot mystery, then this is the book for you. It's ideal for reading in one go, or equally good for dipping into. The book contains every Poirot short story ever written, and the result is a testament to the genius of Agatha Christie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for holidays 19 May 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
All those who enjoy Poirot mysteries (and frankly, who doesn't) will love this book of mini-mysteries: they are as well-written and compelling as the longer stories. This collection is especially appropriate to take on holiday, when you might not want to concentrate on one long story for several hours. It would also be ideal to read while commuting, as you can enjoy a different story each day, without having to trawl through stuff you've already read to remember who so-and-so is. And, of course, it's also great for those of us who are simply impatient, and can't wait 100 pages to find out whodunnit!

5.0 out of 5 stars No better bang for your buck 23 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
Absolutely brilliant collection of short crime fiction. It's a little bulky to manage but for a traveller on the move (or at home on a story a night) it's about as much fun as you can have with your pijamas on!! I had pre-judged Poirot on some pretty poor-rate Hollywood movies and (in my opinion) an over-styled Granada TV series. The novels are well worth this exploratory read and at the cover price you'd be hard pushed to find better value for money. A perfect companion to a long flight or a busy schedule.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any Poirot fan! 8 Oct 2009

Format:Paperback
I bought this as a gift for my other half, who loves everything Hercule. In my house it's primarily used for bedtime or holiday dipping in and out of and I got many kudos points as a bonus!
Recommended as a simple one-stop-shop for completing a Christie collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good short stories 11 April 2003
Format:Paperback
I'm not generally a fan of short stories, but they seem to be the absolute perfect medium for Poirot. This is an exceptionally entertaining read, though I always feel that those TV adaptations have ruined Poirot's true characterisation. Never mind though, read this book and learn about Poirot's true qualities and what he was really intended to be like.

4.0 out of 5 stars All the Poirot short stories 18 Feb 2000
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A great short story collection, perfect for travelling with. The stories aren't as complex as the novels as the word count is too low for that, but each is a satisfying read nonetheless. This collection contains 51 stories (I've abbreviated the titles a little here): Victory Ball, Grand Metropolitan, King of Clubs, Davenheim, Plymouth Express, Western Star, Marsdon Manor, Prime Minister, Bond Robbery, Cheap Flat, Hunter's Lodge, Chocolate Box, Egyptian Tomb, Veiled Lady, Johnnie Waverley, Market Basing, Italian Nobleman, Missing Will, Incredible Theft, Clapham Cook, Lost Mine, Cornish Mystery, Double Clue, Xmas Pudding, Lemesurier Inheritance, Under Dog, Double Sin, Wasp's Nest, 3rd Floor Flat, Spanish Chest, Dead Man's Mirror, How Does Your Garden Grow, Problem at Sea, Triangle at Rhodes, Murder in the Mews, Yellow Iris, Dream, Labours of Hercules (12 stories), and Four & Twenty Blackbirds.

These are, of course, utterly brilliant and it is lovely to have them on my Kindle. It is better not to read one straight after another as they do start to seem formulaic.
