Product Description

Synopsis

Managers involved in the establishment of new woodland and short-rotation coppice on fertile lowland sites face distinctive vegetation management problems. Ex-agricultural and improved grassland sites are normally more fertile than the unimproved grassland sites usually associated with forestry planting. This can result in prolific weed growth competing for nutrients, light and moisture, which can lead to stunted tree growth or complete failure of new plantings. Herbicide treatments developed for use in conventional forestry situations may need to be repeatedly applied to control weeds in farm woodlands, and often need to be directed away from crop trees to prevent damage. This publication offers guidance on identifying herbicides that should give effective weed control on arable and improved grassland sites, while being safe for use over broadleaf and coniferous tree species.
