This is one of the first CDs I bought back in 1986 when CD players were still a novelty. It is still one of my favorite Christmas recordings. Karajan's Berlin Philharmonic is simply stellar in this performance, performing some of the best known Italian baroque pastorales by Corelli, Locatelli, and Torelli. The sound quality is crisp and clear and the brass tracks of Gabrieli are a thrill year after year. The album ends appropriately with a sweet rendition of Gruber's Stille Nacht. For anyone who loves early and baroque music, or for the curious who want to explore the origins of European Christmas music, this is a must-have.
