5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of Karajan's New Year's Eve treats, 23 May 2008
By Mr. R. Lee-van Den Daele (Shipley, England.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This Karajan in Concert 2 DVD set is an enjoyable collection of what the French call caramels d'orchestre.

Sadly, DG appear to have left in the vaults his contemporary and brilliant recordings of Faust's Hungarian March, Bizet's l'Arlesienne suite No 2, Liszt's 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody, the intermezzo to Mascagni's L'amico Fritz, the overture to Suppé's Die leichte Kavallerie and a stonking version of Verdi's overture to La Forza del Destino. They all date from 1978 (one of Karajan's famous Sylvester konzert recordings) and have been issued on DG before (VHS and LD).

I would actually have preferred them to put the Rachmaninov on another disc with something else and included these other bon bons. Let's hope they'll bring them out soon though as they are tremendous.

As for the "Impressions of Herbert von Karajan: a documentary on the Maestro at 70" (1978) directed by Vojtech Jasny, that is the makeweight, it is rather good (though not remastered at all, which is a shame as there are many instances of dirt and debris to be seen). The direction and subtitling are also rather idiosyncratic. At one point Karajan is seen listening to a playback in the studio of one of his Mahler recordings and the various mundane exchanges are subtitled, but when someone cracks a gag which has them all doubled up the joke is left unexplained! Other odd sequences include Karajan walking down the path way to a nondescript modest house, ringing the doorbell (which goes unanswered), walking round to the back and peering through its dirty windows only to then wander off into the garden. Once again no explanation is given for this footage - though I rather suspect that it may have been his first marital home.

Still, a nice double disc set for aficionados. Good value too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection: BPO And HvK In Their Prime, 30 Mar 2008

Wagner, Rossini, Weber, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov. Live in Berlin. Karajan conducting. What could go wrong? Well nothing, of course. Beautiful photography, the conductor typically hypnotic and the orchestra glorious. A luxuriant performance of the Rach 2 with Weissenberg completes the feast.

If you only buy one Karajan DVD...

4.0 out of 5 stars Only for Karajan afficionados, 2 Jan 2009
By A. Perry - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was given this DVD for Christmas. The music is excellent. The musicians are tremendous. The soloist extraordinary. BUT the conductor, Von Karajan, is on a giant ego trip. In the whole performance he does not once open his eyes to make contact with the orchestra but more importantly he does not make contact with the soloist. The result is that the orchestra, at times, appears to be playing Rachmaninov according to Von Karajan and the soloist playing Rachmaninov according to Weissenburg. There is no apparent rapport - no feeling of mutual involvement, understanding and joy at producing, what is, wonderful music
