Maximilian Hornung gives a fervent and elegant rendition. --The Strad,Mar'12

CD Description

Victor Herbert was an Irish-born, German-raised composer who moved to America to find fame as a cellist, conductor and composer. He is best known for his successful operettas that premiered on Broadway from the 1980s to World War I and earned popularity through his entertaining music. However, he was a keen cellist and CPO is pleased to present a selection of irresistible cello works performed by Maximilian Hornung. Maximilian Hornung is first principal cellist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and is supported and sponsored by the Anne-Sophie Mutter Circle of Friends Foundation for young extraordinary gifted string players.

5.0 out of 5 stars SINCERE THANKS FOR THIS MARVELLOUS CD TO CPO 11 Sep 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
ISN'T IT WONDERFUL THAT THERE ARE ARTISTS WHO THINK NECESSARY TO RESURRECT BEAUTIFUL MUSIC AS OFFERED IN THIS CPO CD? IT'S A TOTAL PLEASURE TO LISTEN TO THE EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES AND A SINCERE 'BRAVO! BRAVISSIM0'TO MAXIMILIAN HORNUNG, THE CELLIST. VICTOR HERBERT, THE FAMOUS OPERETTA COMPOSER, WAS INDEED A MUSICIAN 'COI FIOCCHI' AS WE SAY IN ITALY. I HAD A HAPPY HOUR AND I'LL BE LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO BE HAPPY AGAIN IN LETTING MY CD PLAY AGAIN ... THANKS CPO!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very pleasant listening 7 May 2012
By Robert Puckette - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Imagine the rich sonorities of Dvorak's string writing tied to the catchy cheerful tunes a la "Babes in Toyland". Victor Herbert deftly handles the string orchestra writing. It's fun to listen to, and quite well crafted. But serenades are not deep, important music even when Mozart writes them. And the players let the music bubble along.
