This review is from: Herbert Luck North: Arts and Crafts Architecture for Wales (Paperback)
Herbert North has long been the forgotten man of the UK Arts & Crafts Movement, largely because he didn't design fashionable country houses for metropolitan clients but chose instead to practice in rural obscurity in Wales. North had an artistic vision which approached Voysey's in its purity and consistency, and whilst he wasn't in quite the same league of genius, his work deserves a wider audience. The best-known concentration is the early 20th century garden village he designed and developed in Llanfairfechan, North Wales, which comprised both housing and a series of unique public buildings, but he also designed odd buildings throughout Wales and the English Midlands right up to WW2. Like all Arts & Crafts architects, North had a life-long interest in vernacular traditions and his (beautifully-illustrated) 1908 book on the cottages of Snowdonia remains a standard work. North was also deeply religious (architecture was his second choice after the church) and his handful of churches are probably his greatest achievement: he took the 'primitive gothic' of Lethaby and Prior to new levels of abstraction, and in buildings such as St Winifred's, Llanfairfechan (now sadly demolished) and Holy Spirit, Harlescott, he approached almost Expressionist extremes. This outstanding, lavishly-illustrated book by longstanding champion Adam Voelcker, published by RCAHM Wales, is a long overdue re-assertion of North's place in British architectural history.
