This is another excellent biography from musicologist and scholar Paul Spicer. I was a little apprehensive at purchasing this book at first, as I knew very little of Howells' music having only sung the odd motet of his before, but this magnificent book put my mind at rest and intoduced me to the complex personality that was Herbert Howells in a detailed but easy-to-read book. Spicer was a pupil of Howells and clearly expresses his love of the music, but also a fascination of biographical details. It is possible that he sometimes reads a little too much into certain aspects of Howells' personality (eg. the death of his 12-year-old son, Michael from TB), but this simply adds to the charm and mysticism of a life that could so easily be made into an Oscar film!
For historians, Spicer includes detailed factual information on all aspects of Howells' life. For musicians, Spicer displays huge knowledge on Howells' works and how they relate to each other and to events in his life. Overall, it's just a great read. I read it whilst on holiday in Gloucestershire (where Howells lived) and straight away I simply had to buy CDs to go with it! Simply fantastic.
If in doubt, check it out!
