Heraldry in your pocket,
By
This review is from: Heraldry: Its Origins and Meaning (New Horizons) (Paperback)
This delightful small book is one of the 'New Horizons' series from Thames and Hudson. In 144 pages Professor Michel Pastoureau provides a delightful introduction to heraldry, with illustrations from mediaeval times to the modern sports field. The first 96 pages are copiously illustrated in colour, providing an intoduction to the history, language and usages of heraldry. The following 48 pages contain a glossary, index, and some short but more detailed articles on various aspects of heraldry, excerpted from other publications. There is a useful bibliography and list of sources of illustrations. This is a delightful small addition to the library of the heraldic enthusiast, leading one to want to discover more about the subject.

Pastoureau is one of the best heraldry investigators today. His work is here written in a very accessible way, comprehensible by almost every readers, heraldic investigators or not. A great purchase. Simple but effective
