This album, in a nutshell, is a review of what Falkenbach has offered us in the previous three albums. It manages to offer a reflection on how, from the harsh roots of '...Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri...' sprang the much mellower 'Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty' after passing through the truly sublime '...En Their Medh Riki Fara...'. The tracks have been remastered and rearranged, violins replacing some of the synthesizer,s which has resulted in an album that is definitely not just another Best Of but truly a work of art in its own right. Vraytas Vakyas has managed to pull off the stunt of not just recycling previous material, but turning it into something new.

Falkenbach, for me, is simply at the very top of Nordic Metal, an honour it shares with Amorphis (except their later stuff) and, to a slightly lesser extent, Thyrfing. If you are new to all of this, this is an excellent album to start off with. You will find it easier to get into than the previous Falkenbach albums and you can work your way through Skaldic Art from here.

I haven't heard much of Falkenbach, but this is why this album is perfect for me - it is a compilation, sort of "best of" album. You could hear it well, differentiating between their Black Metal era and more of a Viking metal days. Epic, heavy, atmospheric (and some time just raw and evil) metal. I am loving it :)

Driving rock guitars combined with gutteral singing with a flavour of longships throughout. Don't expect a placid sail up the fjord, this is music to sack a monestry to! Having said that, there are the occasional quiet, almost medieval, passages, but they only serve to increase the contrast and makes the loud bits stand out more (did I mention it's mainly loud and raucous?). It's played at a beakneck pace, the vocals are in English, Norse and Dutch. It actually reminds me of Hawkwind from the early '70s in some places, the guitar style is very similar Dave Brock's playing and the vocals on Heathen Foray make it sound like a Hawkwind track. (no bad thing in itself). The only criticism I have is that there isn't more, the entire CD is over in just over 40 minutes. Outstanding tracks are Heathen Foray and Roman Land, although there's no bad tracks on it.
Surprisingly good CD, one I'd recommend to my friends.

Neil
