Product Description

Amelia Darcy has no interest in marrying well. Her heart belongs to the sky and the dirigibles of brass and steel that swoop over Victorian England. But when her father, an eccentric inventor, dies, the Darcy siblings are left with scrap metal—and not a penny to their names. Their only hope to save the family name and fortune is to embark on a contest to discover an invention of historical importance in honor of Queen Victoria.

Armed with only her father’s stories of a forgotten da Vinci workshop, a mechanically enhanced falcon, and an Italian cook, Amelia takes flight for Florence, Italy. But her quest is altered when her kitecycle crashes into the air ship of ex–Air Marshal—and scandalous dime novel hero—Tucker Gentry.

Challenged by political unrest, a devious sky pirate, and their own sizzling attraction, Amelia and Tuck are dragged into an international conspiracy that could change the course of history…again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Her Sky Cowboy is filled with untamed adventure, zany characters and outrageous fun. 7 Nov 2012

Her Sky Cowboy by Beth Ciotta
Paranormal Romance -Nov. 6th, 2012
4 stars

Amelia Darcy is young, impetuous and intensely curious. When her inventor father dies in a freak accident she rebels against her mother who wants her to conform to Victorian standards and marry well. Amelia has plans to recoup her family's honor. When her family gets an invitation from a mysterious benefactor to hunt for a historical invention of great importance and win a fabulous prize, Amelia is inspired to trek out on her own. She has decides to hunt for an invention by da Vinci- the ornithopter. However, her plans go awry when she crashes on her journey. But luckily she is saved by a sky cowboy named Tucker Gentry. A man wanted by the law but with a heart of gold and a crew of misfits who quickly adopt Amelia as one of their own. Together they soon the find themselves helping Amelia on her search but others want Amelia's secrets, too.

This was a lighthearted steampunk romance. I liked how the author mixes Victorian times with a touch of the west and the highly imaginative world of fascinating mechanisms. The villain, who is actually looking to find the means to recreate a time machine is devilishly evil and sinister. The hero, Tucker, has been falsely accused of murder and I liked how Amelia believes in him and gives him a reason to believe in himself again. This book has a great spirit of adventure. The main characters are original and appealing, I only felt that the heroine was sometime a bit too naive and impetuous. She was very fortunate that she met Tucker who watches out for her and loves her. This series will continue with Amelia's two brothers who also want to find a worthy invention and will each have their own book.

Her Sky Cowboy is filled with untamed adventure, zany characters and outrageous fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rollicking adventure! 7 Nov 2012
By The Book Tart - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm new to the steampunk genre and this book was easy for me to escape into. I loved the mashup of Victorian England, inventors, dirigibles, gadgets and the unique twist Beth took in her world building. The world was FUN! But I adored the characters. The heroine Amelia is feisty and brave and not willing to let her brothers go off on a treasure hunt and leave her out. She has clues that could lead her to the perfect prize to win Queen Victoria's challenge and so she sets off. I got a kick out of the contraption she flew in and one of my favorite scenes is when she nearly crashes into Tucker's dirigible! Tucker is a delicious hero. I love his courage and character and the way he viewed the world and judged everyone on their own merit. He admires the fly girl, Amelia's, skill in crash landing her vehicle is attracted to her bravery and attitude. This is a romance! And it's a yummy one. I enjoyed watching them get in deeper than they'd planned as they pursue the treasure and take you on their treasure hunting adventure. This book flew by and I didn't look up till I was done. :)
I am looking forward to the continuing adventures of the Darcy family in the sequels.

(((hugs))) Kat

3.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, needed a little refining 14 Jun 2013
By Vilia - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
The first few pages of this novel drew me in raising my hopes but I found the rest of the book rather uneven. Our heroine Miss Amelia Darcy loses her eccentric inventor father during his attempt to create a rocket ship. Shortly after, she and her two brothers each receive a letter inviting them to partake in a competition to find a lost technological invention for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. In order to save her family from their financially embarrassing situation, Amelia heads off on her kitecycle to track down an invention her father had once told her about. Her vehicle of choice however collides with the airship of Tucker Gentry, ex Air Marshall and sky pirate cowboy.

Amelia was not my favourite heroine. She vacillated from strong, independent and full of adventurous spirit one minute to an immature, naive woman who made really silly decisions. She used phrases like "blinking hell" and "crikey" so often it was jarring. I suspect that the change in her personality occurred so Tucker could prove his prowess but it still irked me. For some reason Amelia was obsessed with politics and judged people based on whether they are Old Worlders, New Worlders or Flatliners. This affected her relationship with Tucker and I really felt she should have had the maturity to judge his worth herself by his actions rather than a political affiliation. Tucker is motivated by two things - money and sex. He needs the money to clear his name which was tainted with accusations of murder and theft. I didn't appreciate the way he got angry with Amelia for "leading him on" after they had first had sex and he discovered she was a virgin. On the plus side, at least Amelia and Tucker discussed issues they had with each other and misunderstandings were resolved rather than dragging on. His motley crew were enjoyable and I would liked to learn more about them.

Ciotta has obviously given some serious thought into how to build her world. We have a variety of steampunk inventions, an alternate history that developed due to 1960s Mods travelling back in time to the Victorian era and even genetically altered people who were the product of Mod and Vic parents. The problem was that it was either feast or famine with lots of fascinating things not fully explained and those that were often reading like info dumps. There was so much stuff included that it was difficult to keep track of it all. The happily ever after ending was a bit too twee for my tastes but I can see how others would enjoy everything being wrapped up in a nice bow.

This novel isn't bad but I would have preferred greater editing to smooth out the characterisation and strengthen the world. I'm going to give the next one a shot and hopefully it will appeal to me more.

5.0 out of 5 stars HER SKY COWBOY 23 Nov 2012
By Alexa Verde - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Let me first confess that I'm a total newbie to steampunk. I probably wouldn't have picked up HER SKY COWBOY if Beth Ciotta didn't happen to be one of my favorite authors. I figured that even if I didn't like the genre, Beth's trademark quirky characters and unique sense of humor will make up for it.

It turned out, the alternate Victorian England was so much fun, especially all the inventions and adventures that filled the pages of the book. Even secondary characters are interesting and full-dimensional. But what again made Beth's book a five-star for me was her main characters. Amelia Darcy is headstrong, sassy, and way ahead of her time. An inventor, adventurer, and a pilot in her own right, she makes a good match for her aeronautical hero. Tucker Gentry, aka Sky Cowboy, is an outlaw with morals and noble goals. Probably in another book this oxymoron would be a stretch for me, but Ms. Ciotta pulls it off nicely.

Not willing to conform and marry for covenience, Amelia embarks on an international quest to find a hidden treasure of historical significance. She needs it to win a contest to honor Queen Victoria and to save her family from financial trouble. In the process, she will risk not only her life but her heart as well.

I believe The Glorious Victorious Darcys are going to be great series, and I can't wait to get my hands on the stories of Amelia's twin brothers, Simon and Jules. Let the adventure go on!

3.0 out of 5 stars looks like a good start to a series 25 Mar 2013

Other reviewers have given you the gist of the story so I won't waste your time. Let me just say that if you stick with it the book seems to get better as you go on page by page. It took me about a third of the way through to really get interested and then I really started to appreciate the concept of time travelers changing history and the bits of old and new technology in this new world. Similarly the characters started out seeming a bit light weight but strengthened as the book progressed.

If you like Steam Punk this is a new twist on how such an age could have come about and is worth a read.
