Product Description

Product Description

Carmen McRae's five year association with Decca and its sister Kapp records between 1955 and 1959 established her as a star and saw her produce what many believe to be the most consistent music of her forty-year career. This collection showcases the best songs from said period in the mid to late fifties where she clearly matches the artistic heights of the Fitzgeralds, Vaughns and Holidays, even if she never quite equalled their popularity.

Carmen McRae, A Collection of her finest Decca recordings 1955 - 1958, NOT3CD135

This 75 track collection with liner notes from Helen Akitt is one of three similar sets covering female vocalists that have been released in November 2013.

As the collection title says these are all Decca recordings. The earliest of the tracks comes from a session dated May 2, 1955 and "A Fine Romance" CD1/3 comes from that set. Sessions on June 14 & 16, 1955 resulted in songs for the album on Decca LP 12": DL-8173 - By Special Request.

November 3, 1955 resulted in songs for the Decca LP 12": DL-8316 - The Feminine Touch, Jack Pleis (dir), Jack Pleis Orchestra (acc).

Sessions on December 16, 29 &30, 1955 resulted in songs for the album on Decca LP 12": DL-8267 - Torchy! Jack Pleis (dir), Jack Pleis Orchestra (acc).

March 28, 29 & 30,1956 resulted in songs for the Decca LP 12": DL-8347 - Blue Moon (1957), Tadd Dameron (con, a), Tadd Dameron Orchestra (acc).

February 18 & 19, 1957 resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8490 - Boy Meets Girl (1957), Sammy Davis Jr., Carmen McRae (v), Jack Pleis Orchestra (acc).

March 6 & April 18,1957 resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8583 - After Glow (1957), Ike Isaacs (b), Ronnell Bright, Carmen McRae (p), Specs Wright (d)

June 18,19 & 20, 1957 sessions resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8662 - Mad About The Man (1957), Jack Pleis (dir).

Sessions on December 5 & 16, 1957 & April 21, 1958 resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8738 - Carmen For Cool Ones (1958), Fred Katz (con, cll, a).

August 4, 6 & 8,1958 resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8815 - Birds of A Feather (1958), Ralph Burns (dir, a).

Amazing voice! 15 Jan. 2015

This is a lovely collection of mostly jazzy torch standards, with a few tracks like "Come Down to Earth, Mr. Smith" which you are unlikely to find recorded by anyone else, but still fit into the genre and style of the rest. Several numbers are light-hearted, chatty duets with Sammy Davis, Jr. All the songs are orchestra backed, from the mid-fifties, and generally sound great: crisp and clear; pleasantly bright; especially the vocals-- less so the band. A notable exception is "The Eagle And Me" from the 3rd disc. The re-mastering on this song is so full of echo that the vocal sounds like it was recorded in a cavernous, empty glass room with a marble floor. There are a few places where muted trumpets in the orchestra sound a bit "wrong." I'm no musician, so I don't know the right word to explain this, but this complaint did not really detract from my enjoyment of the stellar vocals. Those stellar vocals are where your attention rightly will be focused, too, so don't hesitate to purchase this wonderful collection of Ms. McRae's early work.

I hate to sound negative when overall I am quite happy with this compilation, but I was disappointed that the only "liner notes" are written in microscopic text UNDER the clear plastic CD holder for the first disc. The data there gives track numbers and composers' last names, grouped by disc number AND it's distorted by the plastic holder. That's it except for a few short paragraphs of career highlights and biographical notes on the inside tri-part digipack. I really do think the artistry of Ms. McRae deserved a booklet that maybe expanded the personal and professional data, had a discography of the albums from which the material was drawn, and information about the orchestras with which she worked. What you get here doesn't even list Sammy Davis, Jr. on the duet tracks.

All that said, I do believe the quality of the music and the bargain price (75 songs for less than a penny each) justifies the 5 star rating.

This is simply the very best Carmen McRae I've ever heard! This is simply a must have! You can hear the distinct wonderful magic phrasing and interpretation she gives each song! The Decca years, like Peggy Lee's is her best work!
