An unsung hero of the trombone in a rare leader outing 5 Mar. 2008
By Henry B. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Sure, there were female trombone players before Melba Liston-- just look at the "all women" bands of the swing era-- but there were no Modern, harmonically savvy, players who became A-list player/composers like Melba did. Featured in the Quincy Jones Big Band in the late 50's-early 60's, Melba was a killer player whose tone was fantastic and her solo inventions were the envy of all her peers. This album puts her in the company she deserves-- some of the best bone players of the day-- in a rare 60's session that really swings. Highly recommended.

Remembering Melba 5 Jun. 2013
By Scott Whitfield - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
With all the talk about female jazz musicians, it's good to have a reminder of one the true pioneers, Melba Liston. Not only was she an accomplished and soulful trombonist, but she was also one of the premier composers and arrangers of all time. In this setting, she is surrounded by an all-star cast of her trombone peers, including Benny Powell, Bennie Green, Al Grey, Slide Hampton, Frank Rehak, Jimmy Cleveland, and others. In addition to Melba's own writing, some great charts were contributed by Slide Hampton. What a great time to be alive and in music..........
