Book Description

12 Sep 2008
We menstruate more now than at any time in human history. Girls are starting to menstruate earlier due to protein-rich diets and hormones in food; women are less likely to die young; we have fewer children and therefore spend less time not menstruating. Increased work and family stresses, in addition to more periods, mean that women are more physically and psychologically vulnerable to negative attitudes to menstruation. So it is more important than ever that we investigate ways to make our periods physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy.

Review

"Her Blood Is Gold is a graceful and empowering book on menstruation, filled with insights that are equally valuable to both men and women. This book should be included in the curriculum of every school on this planet." -- Christiane Northrup M.D., author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause

"Lara Owen presents a viewpoint on menstruation which is startling in its reversal of conventional attitudes. Her presentation is so lucid and convincing that after reading it one wonders how one could ever have regarded menstruation as a problem. This book is a must for any woman seeking wholeness. This is the rare kind of book that creates culture rather than merely commenting upon it. Lara Owen has sketched the outlines of a new social norm." -- Steven Bratman M.D., author of The Alternative Medicine Sourcebook

"Lara Owen's well-researched, beautifully crafted and elegant book offers the reader a profound perspective on the role of menstruation in the life of women and society. It explores the physical, emotional, spiritual and practical dimensions of menstruation and provides a new and powerful view on this still taboo topic. Owen's book is a classic and a must read for every woman and every man who wishes to understand this powerful part of feminine life. Her book changes lives. You will never look at menstruation in the same way again. Everyone should read this innovative, thoughtful and powerful book. A major contribution." -- Gemma Summers, Ph.D., author of A Woman's Guide to Resolving Conflict

"Like the wise-women whose memory she celebrates, Lara Owen is both scientist and poet. In this wonderful book, she shows how "the curse", when ritually respected and restored to its ancient position, becomes every woman's crock of gold." -- Chris Knight Ph.D., author of Blood Relations: Menstruation and the Origins of Culture (Yale Univ. Press), Professor of Anthropology, University of E. London

"This fascinating exploration into the rich underworld of the female body is a well-written, passionate and thoughtful plea for a return to body-consciousness and acceptance of what it is to be female." -- Lyn Webster Wilde. author of On the Trail of the Women Warriors

Review

"Like the wise-women whose memory she celebrates, Lara Owen is both scientist and poet. In this wonderful book, she shows how "the curse", when ritually respected and restored to its ancient position, becomes every woman's crock of gold."

5.0 out of 5 stars Every woman should read this! 10 July 2011
Format:Paperback
This book was mentioned to me many times in different conversations with other women and so i decided to read it for my self to form my own opinion about it. From the moment it arrived i couldnt put it down.. I started to read it at the beginning of my moon cycle and felt it really supported me throughout and helped me recognise different emotions and feelings towards being a woman and how to perceive them differently which helped. I found it fascinating to read about what other cultures did when a woman was blessed with her time of the month and how they were looked upon as the wise member of their tribe. I love the idea of how women each month are able to shed the past few weeks and begin again renewed, empowered and charged up to embrace what lies ahead. Even if your not into this idea of connecting with the wisdom of your menstruation i recommend to just take a peek inside and read about a womens experience of when she totally embraced the moments of her moon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring 10 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to know more about the menstruation and special if has issues with PMS, painful periods, etc. Throughout all the book, it gives a whole different approach to the simply physical thing that the body undergoes every month, and it is often felt as a nuisance in woman's lives. It helps to connect with the spiritual part of being a woman ruled by cycles and awakens the femininity inside us.

Format:Paperback
A refreshing read for any woman who has any doubts about the benefits of menstruating. Some references I feel are unfounded but by large the author has delivered an interesting read with natural insight and wisdom based on self observation, personal experiences and facts. A very worth while.
