My aunt read this book to me when I was a young child. I remember, when I saw the book it looked so old and worn out, but out of this book came the best story I have ever heard. A couple of years later, when I was old enough to read myself, my beloved parents got me "Benny Hennara", as it is called in Faroese (my native language), for my birthday. I read it several times and I have read it out loud to many children, latest to my nephews. The story about Nell and Benny is so fascinating and any child can identify with the story. It is great to see the love Nell and Benny have for each other and how they always strive to do the right thing in spite of all the odds they have against them and all the temptations they come a cross. Also old Joe and Grandma' who both have the kind of personality, which you rarely find today - kind, loving, caring, giving and unselfish. There is a bit of sadness all through out the book, however, many times it is overshadowed by Benny's funny remarks and accidents, and the several happy incidences which take place. Finally, it has a very happy, deserving ending for our dear Benny. I will recommend this book to anyone at any age, you will be so much richer after having read "Her Benny". God bless Silas K. Hocking for writing this book.

My first encounter with 'Her Benny' was as a school child when my Primary school teacher read it to the class. It is a tale of survival of the poorest of childern in a harsh Victorian unforgiving world. However the two main child characters find christian help in unlikely circumstances. Having read the book again recently, some twenty years later, I find the book less about life in Victorian times as a child, although all the messages of poverty and the absence of welfare are there, but more about two children finding God's presence and love. A heart warming yet sad story.

Her Benny did not inspire me too much I have to say, It was written by Silas Hocking, a man of the church. It was written in 1829, so had a far different feel to it than we would expect today! and I suppose should be taken into account.
Benny and Nelly are street urchins, badly abused by their parents and sent out to sell matches day after day on the streets of Liverpool. It is the story of how they struggle to survive, to make a better life for themselves. Running away from home and befriending Joe, a lighter upper for the district. It is full of religious advice on how to live a good and honest life, (which is good, in its way) but I found it more like a pamphlet for the church. It is, I suppose written with children in mind and is meant to be an example to them, but a little too emphatic for my tastes today.
However I did get caught up in the childrens lives and was willing them to get through, so it can't have been all bad!
