4.0 out of 5 stars Vivid, living history 23 Jan 2013
Generally, when this is discussed alongside the TV series, the film comes off worse, but I cannot agree.

I recently bought the BBC series and watched it for the first time in 40 years, and while I'm glad to have done so, it has to be said it hasn't worn well. The scenery is all studio based and cheap and nasty; the acting makes up for that in many cases but certainly not all. There is a lot more detail than most will want in most cases; episode 1 is an exception, and I learned a lot from it, but sadly it is one of the weakest episodes in many ways.

The film, on the other hand, tells its story slickly and briskly, with never a dull moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tudor Triumph 24 Jun 2013
By Kokino
This is a classic movie follow-up to the popular award winning UK BBC TV series.

Keith Michell reprises his unforgettable turn as the King and is for many the best TV Henry VIII thus far. Although the movie is meant to be about the much married King looking back over his life and reminiscing on his death bed - it is difficult to feel much sympathy for him! He was a complex man and a paranoid ego maniac who morphed from a dashing athletic demi-god to a bloated monster.

This is an altogether much starrier affair than the series and much grander with lovely locations and sumptuous costumes.

All the wives are played by actresses of note - kudos particularly to Charlotte Rampling and Lynne Frederick. But one does hanker after some more screen time for them. If one might be so pedantic as to suggest that Anne Boleyn's execution might have been a good addition and more time for Frances Cuka's Katherine of Aragon and a bit more background on the King's final marriage to develop. But this is all by the way - its a well mounted movie with commendable attention to detail and authentic looking actors.

Inspite of the newspapers frequent reviews of yore about the movies "flatness" and not standing up well to original series - the reverse is true. This is a great piece of movie history and is still the most authentic Tudor movie to date.

It is remembered more fondly these days.

In some respects it is a bit traditional for the history purist - but it was made in the early 70's before new material on Henry VIII and his court was unearthed. There has also been a sea-change in people's representation of Anne Boleyn since then. But all in all - it stands up very well indeed

If only more historical movies and TV series were made with this level of integrity.

A must buy for any serious Tudor enthusiast.

First things first:Keith Michell is from his appearance simply the best Henry VIII ever seen on the screen. The only one who comes near is of course Ray Winstone himself. He is corpulent and looks a lot like great Harry indeed. The costume designer did his homework brilliantly. He studied the Holbein portraits very carefully. The clothing is problably the best I have ever seen in a Tudor movie. The film is based on the brilliant series starring Keith. All queens have their own episode and there is more depht to the different persons. All 6 queens in 2 hours-what you see everywhere in Tudor related films and documentaries:Catherine Howard and especially Katherine Parr are rushed trough due time limitation. She almost has no dialogue at all.The fact of her book about the sinner, which almost cost her her head is not mentioned at all.All that remains is the great resemblance with the billiant portrait by William Scrots.

Talking about resemblance:Norfolk,Cranmer,Anne Boleyn they all look great.Norfolk is in one scene a lookalike from the Holbein portrait with the necklace and fur coat.I,ve seen it in real, what a detail by the great master.
The series ''The Tudors'' prove where it all can go wrong.Henry VIII is played well, the acting is very good. But I constantly think:who is this guy?Should this be great Harry?Too young,no beard, not corpulent and bad clothing to my opinion.Athmosphere is very important in historic series.

The acting and settings in this 2 hour movie(widescreen filling the screen)is also brilliantly done.Shepperton studios?,the same athmosphere as ''man for all seasons''-a must have for Tudor fans.

Conclusion:Great film, superb costumes, great acting, but first look at the series starring Keith Michell for more detail concerning the various queens.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good film 7 Aug 2013

The rating I gave this was fair, as I am a fan of the story of Henry VIII and his wives, but the story is a bit predictable and Anne Boleyn is painted as a baddy, which I feel is not the case. But its a fun film to watch nonetheless.

Keith Michell is Henry VIII and is probably the best Henry VIII you can see, anywhere. I can only recommend it and heartily do so.

I love the early music, all the music including incidental music is from the tudor period. Good acting. Good music from the late David Munrow.

Acting, costumes, script, sets, there is nothing much to dislike about this movie, I would have given it five stars if the music was just a tad better in places.

I recon it's best to get both the film and the plays.
