Shortlisted for Award - and rightly so,
By
This review is from: Henry Tumour (Definitions) (Paperback)
This book has been shortlisted for the Lancashire Children's Book of the Year Award, which is how I heard of it. I saw it on a flyer while browsing in my local library. I was intrigued by the title. It is about a boy who finds out he has a brain tumour. That sounds pretty heavy for teen fiction but the book makes you laugh out loud as it deftly handles philosophical themes such as: why are we here? why do we die? etc. It is probably suitable for readers over 12. My son also liked it very much. He read it in two days. Highly recommended.

Brilliant,

Get past the street language and edginess of the first few chapters and you'll find yourselves with a funny and moving read that gets right to the core of what goes on in a teenage boy's life these days - handling school-work, bullies, loving parents, the opposite sex... Okay, okay, so I'm obviously an adult who read it, but it's one of the best novels for anyone that I've read in years. Apart from being well-written and right on target for its intended audience, it's thought-provoking and actually sends a huge number of positive messages. It's very powerful without being preachy. And I can't praise the final pages enough.Open your mind. Just read it.

Funny and Frightening,

An astonishing book, it positively sparkles with originality. McGowan captures the turmoil of teenage life so perfectly that I have my suspicions he is still 15 - he does, after all, know the secret to stopping time.I laughed, I cried, I fell over because i took the book with me when I was walking the dog. There were moments when I whooped with delight - the Revels Roulette , Flaherty's triumph with a bin, Mordred landing in the vomit, and the final graphic sequence when, well, I won't spoil it for you. Read it, it's quite brilliant.
