NOT LIGHT READING... 25 Jan 2011
By S. Henderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Wading into any of James' late fiction can be maddening for several reasons, not the least being "what the heck is he getting at"? The sentences are long and sometimes puzzling, putting the reader in the position of constantly trying to figure out what he/she just read; it can definitely mess with the flow of narrative. Another problem will be the lack of action; most of James can seem like alot of innermost thoughts spilled out over acres of paragraghs. It takes time to get thru James but it can seem like a heroic effort when concluded. The reader however will most likely come away with this thought: "Couldn't he have said all this in a short story?" Believe me, some of his longer short stories feel like novels. Anyone tackling these 3 last novels should probably start with THE OUTCRY and if surviving, attempt the others at another time (a respite is absolutely necessary). And if you must own these, the LOA editions are the standard and congratulations go out to them for issuing all of James' fiction, criticism and travel writings in the finest editions being put out today. Just make sure that when reading THE AMBASSADORS or THE GOLDEN BOWL you've got a reader's guide handy; there's a reason even English majors have a problem with the Jamesian style.
