Product Description

Steve 14/10/01 © Copyright New Horizons 1999-2001. All rights reserved

This is a perfect album to chill out with on these darkening autumn evenings and comes highly recommended.

Wouter Bessels © Copyright Background Magazine

Interesting project with hints of ‘postrock’ prog, like Godspeed, space rock, a bit of jazz and Tim Bowness’ distinctive vocals.

Unusual Stuff 19 Dec 2001
By Nick C VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I've lived with this album for a few months now and it just gets better with each listen. It certainly isn't an album that will hit you immediately and it needs a little perseverence, although there are parts of it which will stick in your brain on first play (Poppy Q springs to mind). This I feel is a true progressive rock album i.e. the musicians involved are trying to create new sounds instead of aping Genesis or Yes. Having said that you may find influences such as Van der Graaf, King Crimson and obviously in view of the roots of some of the musicians involved in the project, No Man and Samuel Smiles. Saying that though I played it a friend who came up with a totally different set of references (Weather Report???? ...Wha..???). Fair enough the album does have a slight jazzy feel to it thanks I think mainly to Myke Cliffords sax excursions, but it seems to hold a more ambient progressive feel to me!
Anyway it's a fantastic album, songs such as The Laughter That Turned to Ice are just so cool, and listen to "Lord" Peter Chilvers go bonkers on his bass guitar on Bass Pig.
Definately an album worth buying if you like your music to still be with you in years to come as opposed to being condemned to the shelves gathering the dust of indifference.

The unusual pairing of Tim Bowness (NoMan) and Fudge Smith (Steve Hackett/Pendragon) with Stephen Bennett (Fudges' LaHost pal) and some Samual Smilers, has produced a seamless whole that shifts between the haunting beauty of 'The Laughter..' and 'Judy...' via the contemporary 'heartattack' and 'Dreamers..' to the jazz tinged 'jazz monkey' and 'Mellow moods'. Other, more agressive workouts such as 'Poppy Z and 'David warner' invoke the mood of a Godspeed or King Crimson, while other areas evoke a progressive or song based mood. Two tracks remixed by Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree too. As varied as its participants suggest, this is a highly recommended album!
