Book Description

29 Feb 2012
Henry Darrow (born Enrique Tomás Delgado) catapulted to international stardom in 1967 as sexy, complex "Manolito Montoya" in the western The High Chaparral. He was the first actor of Puerto Rican heritage to star in a television series. "Henry survived and had a career when if you were Latino, you couldn't be just good, you had to be beyond great and that's Henry," says noted writer/entertainer Rick Najera. At the height of his fame Darrow put his career on the line to open doors for other Hispanics. He has continued to break ground for over fifty years as a working actor and was recently featured on the PBS series Pioneers of Television. LIGHTNING IN THE BOTTLE is the must-read portrait of this inspirational, fiercely determined, endearing and enduring Emmy-winning performer.

I enjoyed this book a lot. If you still enjoy the iconic High Chaparral TV western series, like me, you will appreciate the significant chunks of the book devoted to the background to that show and Henry's role in it as Manolito. Lots of details and info about the other stars.

On another level it is an actor's journey, one might say a character actor with a high degree of charisma or old fashioned latin screen appeal. Just reading an early bio of Paul Rogers, another character actor treading the boards in England through rep and the Old Vic. Hollywood and the English stage might not seem that comparable, but the one awesome ingredient in both is the sheer vitality and spark in these individuals who have the innate ability to get on a stage and hold an audience in the palm of their hands with charm, authority, wit and intelligence.

Thus we have a good arching account of a career that took Henry to a considerable success, then through the leaner periods and finally his recent activity and involvement in smaller scale (but still high quality!) productions such as "Burning Impatience", "Cervantes" and "My Fair Lady".

Along the way his family background and personal ups and downs - there is a certain amount of grief and tragedy - are recounted with startling candour, but without bitterness or undue emphasis.

Underlying all this is the emergence of Hispanic acting and management talent in Hollywood to its rightful position representing that vibrant and historic community. And of course the part Henry's success and work played in all this.

This book does describe stardom and celebrity and "success" - whatever that is - but more than that it is about the WORK. As Mr Darrow said in a Youtube clip of his acceptance of a lifetime achievement award in L A : "I like to work!"

Thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying read.

I have always liked Henry Darrow and watched almost everything he ever appeared in, but my favourite character that he played was, of course, Manolito Montoya. The cover therefore intrigued. However, the book was so much more fantastic than I could ever have imagined. It is well written and contains lots of Henry's humour - he is a funny guy, he is a complex guy, but above all that he is a very brave man. Brave to have his whole life on show. Not just bits of it, not just the good times, but all the heartache and all the worry. If anyone could ever live up to and even surpass the fantasy it is Henry Darrow. Jan Pippins has done a marvellous job in writing everything down in his spirit if not his actual words. You feel every good moment and you ache for every bad one. I will have to read it several more times to absorb every nuance, but it kept my interest from the very first page. Whether you know anything about Henry or not, it is a rollercoaster of a read that you won't be able to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Manolito Man 21 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
An absolute must for all High Chaparral fans, of which I include myself. The characters from Big John to the Bunkhouse boys were so believable. Henry Darrow took the part of Manolito Montoya and made it his own. This book tells all, from the beginning until to date. A blinding good read.
