Format: Audio CD
This handsome box-set brings together all mature works written by Henri Dutilleux (1916 - 2013), the "quiet man" of French music, excluding only his occasional music for plays and movies. Apart from opera, it's pretty much all there: orchestral pieces, concertos, chamber music, songs, piano pieces, in fact on the 6 discs the pieces are grouped together in those genres, not chronologically. Recordings from multiple labels are represented, including 2 works from the recent high-profile Deutsche Gramophon release conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Dutilleux comes across as a kind of master craftsman, working away on and fine-tuning his relatively small oeuvre constructed over the course of some 60 years. His style can be characterised as classicist French, i.e. pure music but high on atmosphere - think Ravel, Debussy even, not so much Messiaen or Poulenc, although by 1970 he had also evidently caught up with the techniques of the post-war avant-garde. He had a knack for writing very striking openings and composed these 10 to 30 minute pieces without any real pauses that are nevertheless divided up into smaller sections. He wrote mostly single instances of particular forms and combinations of instruments and found inspiration in other art-forms like painting (van Gogh) and poetry (Rilke).
The first disc has the two symphonies (the first in what is by far the oldest recording here from 1971), both of which end with a beautifully serene passage. At times one gets this dreamy feeling of vistas far and wide, the first also has the only moments approaching bombast (or perhaps French grandeur) which was not really Dutilleux's style.

No song texts? That STINKS 10 Jun 2014

No song texts or translations? Not even a link? You have to be kidding. What kind of 'edition' is that. Shame on you, DG.
