More About the Author

Henri Cartier-Bresson (August 22, 1908 - August 3, 2004) is perhaps the greatest photographer of the twentieth century. In a career spanning over sixty years, he has used his camera as an impassive and neutral third eye to capture the vagaries of human behaviour and to produce some of the most memorable and compelling photographs ever published.

I am a little dubious about this book. It is a very beautiful book but maybe it has more of a historic value than, say, a quality value because the book seems to be an exact reproduction of the original "The Decisive Moment" published over 60 years ago.

It means that, although the quality of the matt paper is excellent, the photos look just like they looked in the original book ( I never saw the original book but Steidl says that this is a facsimile so...) and don't have the quality, the definition of Cartier Bresson photos in newer books such as "Henri Cartier Bresson Photographe", published by Delpire in 2005 (a new edition of their 1979 book), for example. Incidentally, the Delpire book has good part of the photos from this book and many more that are not in "The Decisive Moment".

I didn't read the "product details" on Amazon's page and found out, when I received the book, that it was bigger than I was expecting. The book comes inside a hard case and, as I wrote before, seems to be an exact reproduction of the book published by Simon and Schuster in 1952. There is a large notebook included. It has a text , written by Clement Cheroux, about Cartier Bresson's original "The Decisive Moment".

The book also has a fascinating essay written by Cartier Bresson. He starts the essay quoting Jean-François-Paul de Gondi, cardinal de Retz, who wrote in his autobiography in the 17th century that "There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment".

The book has a few double pages photos that I really don't like as they limit the view of the photograph.

All that said, it is a very beautiful book but I wonder if they should have printed the photos with more resolution.

I've already spent hours with it, and look forward to many more.

To those who are disappointed with the quality of reproduction of the pictures - please remember that these were taken with what were, at the time, considered to be miniature cameras C-B was a pioneer of 35mm still photography. They had severe limitations of lens quality and film resolution; and C-B wasn't an art photographer.

A classic, no The Classic book on street photography. Much bigger than I imagined, and a much more crude production than I imagined. The size of the images lets you almost move into them. If you are serious about street photography and Cartier-Bressson, then this is you primary source of inspiration.
