Product Description

Product Description

The incomparable photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson is renowned for his ability to capture striking and memorable images of people and places. He has described his personal approach to photography as being 'at one and the same time the recognition of a fact in a fraction of a second and the rigorous arrangement of the forms visually perceived which give the fact expression and significance'. This book is the first major publication to deal with Cartier-Bresson's landscape photography. His work as a reporter took Cartier-Bresson through many countries and continents - his passion for China, India and Spain is well-known and well documented in other books published by Thames & Hudson - but his extraordinary country and city landscapes are a lesser-known part of his oeuvre. These richly diverse and compelling images, many of which have never been published before, are superbly reproduced in this volume by the finest quality duotone printing. They underscore yet again Cartier-Bresson's reputation as the geniune master of photography.

A real treat 11 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
Recently I went to see an exhibition of HCB's City and Landscape pictures in Wolfsburg, Germany and was captivated. I know his work well and have a number of books with his photographs as well as a biography but his landscape work is rarely included. Sadly they did not have a exhibition catalogue so I went searching on my trusty amazon and found this issue "Used as new" at a very reasonable price. The quality of the publication is excellent in every respect and the size of the images is good - only surpassed by going to see the full size enlargements in an exhibition!

most dissapointing 3 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Given the superb quality of other monographs form this publisher (Brandt, Brassai, Edwin Smith etc.), and especially at this high price level, this book is a severe dissapointment. The reproductions lack sparkle, depth, or quality. Each illustration has a distracting border, and furthermore at least half the pages are blank !!!! At this price the reader has every right to expect more than a padded out paperback book. Hopes that this book would do justice to HCB's landscapes, and townscapes remain unfulfilled.

A superb monograph 27 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ignore the review that gives only one star to this book, the person who wrote it obviously knows nothing about photography or Cartier-Bresson. The photographs are beautifully reproduced, complete with the black key-lines that Cartier-Bresson insisted on to ensure that his pictures were printed un-cropped. Most of the photographs are presented on a single page against a blank opposite page so you can look at each one without distraction.
The quality of the hardback book is superb, the paper is smooth without being shiny and the cloth boards are nice and heavy.
All in all, this is one of the best Cartier-Bresson monographs ever printed.
