I recently came across an image that I wanted to make into an embroidery - the question I faced was "how could I do it?" It wasn't a photograph or a print that I wanted to use but more of an outline, so using my pc pattern creation program was not really an option. What I needed was a way to copy the outline onto the material without any contents.

I have always loved my mother's collection of needlework magazines which have some of the most beautiful iron-on transfers inside, and it was this type of transfer I wished I could make, but I didn't know how and I didn't want to ruin the work I had already done.

It was, however, while I was looking for another product that I stumbled across these pencils.

Using a transfer pencil is easy, all you need is a good quality tracing paper (thinner tracing paper will not stand up to the ironing as well as thicker tracing paper), the transfer pencil, the image you want to copy, the material you want to copying on to and an iron.

Trace slowly and carefully round the image you want to transfer, it is recommended that you use a sharp pencil but I tend to use a slightly blunt one to get a better outline.

Once you have the outline prepared you must place it on the material - this is where you must be especially careful as once you have started to iron on the image the transfer becomes permanent so you must have it exactly where you want it to be when you start to apply the heat and you must not let it move. I use dressmakers or glass headed pins to attach the pattern to the material to ensure it doesn't slip when I'm ironing.

This pencil serves its purpose, although did take me two or three attempts to perfect a good technique for its use. The pencil works best when a little work, not good for tracing delicate or fine lines. Iron with no steam for it to work most efficiently.

Works very well although the marks are permanent which means you have to make sure you cover the whole line

Didn't iron on fabric like I thought it would. Lines are very feint and you have to go over with a black pen.
