Product Description

Product Description

This is a collection of short stories from first-time author Lee Seymour - based around his interpretation of the world which surrounds him. Lee was born suffering from a condition known as hemiplegia, and he struggles valiantly with this lifelong impairment. In this book he deals with a range of issues such as bullying, death, family and sex. His brief and sometimes frank admissions are a breath of fresh air in a society that fails to understand that disability isn't something to be scared of.

About the Author

Born in Manchester, Lee Seymour was brought up and educated in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. Lee has two brothers - one in his last year of high school and the other, a university graduate. A single man, Lee has been living independently in a flat for the past eight years. He enjoys watching Aberdeen football club, and is captain of the 'Cygnets' - a local pub darts team. His passions include listening to music, quizzing, going to horse races, meeting people from other countries, and good food. Lee's favourite book to date is Colin Schindler's 'Manchester United Ruined My Life'. Lee has a fascination with Scandinavia and would one day love to live in Sweden.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fair read but utopian it is not., 2 Nov 2009
This review is from: Hemiplegic Utopia: Manc Style - Living with Hemiplegia (Paperback)
Hemiplegic Utopia is a book by Lee Seymour who suffers from hemiplegia, a form of cerebral palsy affecting the fine motor use of one side of the body. There are some comical stories as well as some painful and tragic anecdotes that detail Lee's life thus far. The sorrow the writer has had to overcome and the determination with which he has got through life is well illustrated.
Overall, however, while the concept of this book is excellent, the struggles the author describes seem only tenuously linked to his hemiplegia. It says more about football and growing up in general than living with a disability and the idiosyncrasies this provides to operating in the world. If this was the aim, the title is somewhat misleading.
Also, at times, the editing was questionable; Confusing tangents and typing errors made the book laborious and difficult to read. I really wanted to like this book as I have hemiplegia too, but I think you'd get more out of it if you are a football fan, which I am not particularly.
