We just got back from Helsinki and found this guide really useful. Aside from being beautiful - the paper stock, photography and colour scheme are all excellent - it functions well as an alternative city guide. Don't buy this if you want a comprehensive guide with detailed maps and information about currency, transport and other rudiments. It's more of a compliment to the city - if you like art, design and scratching below the surface of a city you will most definitely appreciate it. We also had a Finnish to English pocket dictionary and used free maps from the hotel and tourist information. We have two copies (long story) and we were going to send one back, but our copy got battered and bruised from too much use so we're keeping the other one too - it's just so damn good looking.
I bought this in advance of my recent trip to Helsinki as it looked to be the best available. As a guide to design in Helsinki it works, and it has lots of nice pictures. As a city guide it is next to useless. If you want a general view of the city and surrounding attractions pick up a local guide at the airport or your hotel. We managed to find a mix of restaurants and places to see without this book - I recommend the same approach for anyone except a real enthusiast for design.

Doesn't work as a basic guide.

This guide only works if used as an companion piece to a regular guide. It has good photos, but the places are difficult to correlate to the maps.
