5.0 out of 5 stars Science at a glance. For anyone aged 10+ 22 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
There is a lot of well illustrated information in the book, which is designed to introduce all the basics of biology, physics and chemistry.

Cons

Limited to the three core sciences.
The publishers D.K. are still using dark colours to highlight text, which makes it less readable.
The science presented is only introductory.
The scientific method is poorly explained.
The overall appearance is quite feminine, so may put off some boys.
The main text is in a small font.
The text could be better written. For example this sentence is too long and confusing.

"Inside the cell, large molecules such as proteins and even entire organelles are hoisted around by microtubules, which are also used in cell division."

Pros

There is a lot of content, which is visually very accessible.
Many very useful and impressive diagrams.
Suitable both as a teaching aid and as a reference book.
Suitable for anyone with a curious mind
Covers a wide range topics within the core subjects.
Very Sturdy cover.
Deserves a permanent place in any family reference library.

Whilst this book is entitled Help Your Kids with Science, suggesting it is a book for parents, I suspect that in most cases it will be the children's bookcase that it will end up on. I have no real problem with this, in that children get enough spoon feeding of information at school. It can be good sometimes to allow them to take the initiative to learn in their own time. This is a book that a child will keep wanting to pick up if left to their own devices.

For parents this book is time same reference, because it is so pictorial. It is also extremely useful for the many parents for whom English is not their first language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent science book, clear and well laid out 17 Oct 2012
By CMB VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
My daughter has just started secondary school (11) and this book matches exactly the material in the science book she's bringing home. Not how many school years it covers, probably two or three, i.e. before they select subjects for GCSE. But it's clearer than the school book, better presented and perfect for homework. Although it's aimed at parents, there's no reason why children shouldn't use it for their own reference.

As with all VK books, it's just that bit more usable and friendlier than the others - they seem to have the right balance of whitespace, for example. It never looks cluttered or dense, but the info you need is there.

4.0 out of 5 stars With foreword by Carol 16 Dec 2012
By Angel TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I'm not really sure, bar writing the intro what Carol Vordeman's role in this book was exactly, as the same book seems to be also available without her photo - Help Your Kids with Science: A Unique Step-By-Step Visual Guide. "Celebrity" photo on cover aside, the inside which has been written by a mix of scientists and science teachers, is clear and easy to understand. I would imagine that this is pitched to KS3/4 - the topics of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are covered fairly comprehensively. There are plenty of clear diagrams and a few photos to illustrate everything. There is not too much text per page and throughout the 250 pages, with a handy glossary of terms at the back, everything is well explained - if you are used to DK books then this is much of the style and quality you would expect. There are no gimmicks as such, just a clear and useful reference book for school science and sure to be helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars a really useful opener 20 Oct 2012
By Antigone VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
useful background primer. It would be helpful if it had some kind of curriculum or age link - key stage 3? it's good but basic in some areas and advanced in others. But a helpful manual to respond to queries and spark an interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riding to the rescue of the baffled parent... 15 Oct 2012
By Withnail67 TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
It's sobering to realise as the Dad of youngsters around 10 years that I last attended a science lesson in 1983...despite plugging away in education to doctoral level, my ability to guide my two through the early stages of Science KS3 and GCSE is rockily based on Brian Cox documentaries and the science pages of The Observer. Nothing wrong with them per se, but this book is a really comforting presence on the bookshelf.

The scientific basics in homework-help-friendly pages are well - illustrated and coherently describe in an accessible, but unpatronising manner. The price of 8.99 for this item is seriously good value, and while it might not make their eyes light up with joy on Xmas day, they will thank you eventually!

Oh, the real double whammy is the presence of two outstanding brands - Dorling Kindersley could publish beermats and make them beautiful and informative: Carol Vordeman *is* beautiful and informative - win win.

Great item - must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help Your Kids With Science 25 Aug 2012
By S Riaz HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book is really good value for money and an ideal homework resource for parents and children alike. At 256 pages, the book has sections for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It begins with a simple explanation of what science is, how it is applied, methods used and different fields in the subjects. The three areas of science are all covered thoroughly, with definitions of scientific terms, loads of diagrams and charts. The book is colourful, well laid out and easy to navigate, with a useful glossary and index.

I think this would be a great buy for children who are just starting secondary school. Although my son is slightly younger, at eight, he begins science homework for the first time this year and (as it is his favourite subject) has already found much to be interested in. Another book in this excellent series, which I think will be worth investigating, is Help Your Kids With Maths. If your child struggles with homework or revision, you might find this a less daunting textbook than many on the market.
