About the Author

Edmund Tirbutt, a multi-award winning journalist and health insurance consultant, has been teetotal for over 24 years after overcoming a serious drink problem. Helen Tirbutt, a communications and change management consultant, has been teetotal for five years after giving up alcohol for lifestyle reasons.

Prior to writing either this book or their previous market-leading title Beat the Booze (Harriman House 2008), the authors knew numerous people with drink problems. Some they managed to help, others they didn't. If they'd had the knowledge in those days that they have now, they feel the outcomes for those they couldn’t help may have been very different.

These life experiences have given them a passionate desire to help other problem drinkers and their friends, families and work colleagues.

When searching for answers to family member's problems I thought I'd give this book a try. I had been searching for advice from wider family and once had even approached my own GP for advice on how to best proceed.

This book is very clearly set out and the authors evidently have personal experience and have gained much knowledge. It plainly defines how those close to the addict should respond and learn detachment, and gave me a real appreciation of how organisations such as Al-anon and AA work; Al-anon now sounds far less daunting to me than I would have otherwise thought.

With exciting new treatments on the horizon and one in particular that has already written it's own success stories and now requires funding for clinical trials, I was much more enlightened than I thought possible. The book draws on advice given by a wide range of experts around the globe and there are many case studies - which I found refreshing as there were many aspects that I could relate to.

The case studies are gritty and demonstrate that help is available however hard things might get; the book itself points to many resources of potential support.

Both captivating and constructive. An altogether wonderful book which warms, educates, and both engages with and challenges conventional opinion to give the reader much more insight to approach the problem.

I bought this book for a very good friend of mine (and his young family) who has struggled with booze for a long time. I am only part way through but wanted to leave this as it's such a good practical guide for anyone and their family affected by alcohol - it's definately a 'must buy' and has an effective down to earth approach!

I also want to recommend the previous book Beat the Booze: A Comprehensive Guide to Combating Drink Problems in All Walks of Life as that's a great companion to this book and is more focused on the individual with lesser reference to the family. I read the book myself before giving it to my friend and this feedback is based on my findings but also with the feedback from him and his family. I didn't buy it in amazon, but you can get it here.

Firstly in short 'Beat The Booze' and 'Help Them Beat The Booze' are 'must buys' if you've been struggling with alcohol in your daily life or if you've started to notice it's beginning to impact you, your work and family (or if you are a friend or family member who wants to better understand and help) - better earlier than later! Both are very well written and very practical and non-judgemental in their approach. It's great in that they both have a real life approach and understanding to the issues, symptoms and techniques to help beat the booze. My friend found 'Beat The Booze' very useful and he's gotten a lot of great progress and improvement in his life and just as importantly for those around him - especially his immediate young family.

Finally, a book that gives me some hope/light. I bought this book as someone who has been searching for good information on addiction for many years . It was written with real compassion and i felt the writters understood the feelings of helplessness those of us who love addicts can feel.Importantly, it has given me fresh hope. It also reminded me i need to look after myself. Thankyou for all the above.

This excellent book should offer comfort to anyone who has a friend, family member or partner with an alcohol problem. It has lots of useful information and I found the case studies and practical advice helpful and insightful. The book provides a comprehensive guide to available treatments, including more modern ones that I was previously unaware of. The book also emphasises the importance of looking after yourself as well as a problem drinker. I found the chapter on children (both young and adult) of problem drinkers intersting and I appreciated the inlcusion of a chapter on helping someone trying to cut-down their drinking in addition to the chapters on more seriously addicted drinkers. It is well-written with an accessible, supportive tone and I think many people in this situation would find much in this book to help them.
