Signpost in the wilderness,
This review is from: Help Them Beat the Booze: How to survive life with a problem drinker (Paperback)
When searching for answers to family member's problems I thought I'd give this book a try. I had been searching for advice from wider family and once had even approached my own GP for advice on how to best proceed. This book is very clearly set out and the authors evidently have personal experience and have gained much knowledge. It plainly defines how those close to the addict should respond and learn detachment, and gave me a real appreciation of how organisations such as Al-anon and AA work; Al-anon now sounds far less daunting to me than I would have otherwise thought. With exciting new treatments on the horizon and one in particular that has already written it's own success stories and now requires funding for clinical trials, I was much more enlightened than I thought possible. The book draws on advice given by a wide range of experts around the globe and there are many case studies - which I found refreshing as there were many aspects that I could relate to. The case studies are gritty and demonstrate that help is available however hard things might get; the book itself points to many resources of potential support. Both captivating and constructive. An altogether wonderful book which warms, educates, and both engages with and challenges conventional opinion to give the reader much more insight to approach the problem.

A 'Must Buy' and excellent practical guide for individuals and families affected by alcohol!,
This review is from: Help Them Beat the Booze: How to survive life with a problem drinker (Paperback)
I bought this book for a very good friend of mine (and his young family) who has struggled with booze for a long time. I am only part way through but wanted to leave this as it's such a good practical guide for anyone and their family affected by alcohol - it's definately a 'must buy' and has an effective down to earth approach!I also want to recommend the previous book Beat the Booze: A Comprehensive Guide to Combating Drink Problems in All Walks of Life as that's a great companion to this book and is more focused on the individual with lesser reference to the family. I read the book myself before giving it to my friend and this feedback is based on my findings but also with the feedback from him and his family. I didn't buy it in amazon, but you can get it here. Firstly in short 'Beat The Booze' and 'Help Them Beat The Booze' are 'must buys' if you've been struggling with alcohol in your daily life or if you've started to notice it's beginning to impact you, your work and family (or if you are a friend or family member who wants to better understand and help) - better earlier than later! Both are very well written and very practical and non-judgemental in their approach. It's great in that they both have a real life approach and understanding to the issues, symptoms and techniques to help beat the booze. My friend found 'Beat The Booze' very useful and he's gotten a lot of great progress and improvement in his life and just as importantly for those around him - especially his immediate young family. It's been great to set how well he and his family have developed better understanding, strategies and techniques to beat the booze and keep life on an 'even keel' I particularly liked the detailed sections on friends and family, very useful for those of us without the drink problem but who care and who want to both understand and give positive help and support. I particularly like how the author has expanded and added to this in his second book 'Help Them Beat The Booze'. I highly recommend both books, I was delighted to see that this follow up book has just launched aimed increasingly at the immediate and supporting family and friends. I cannot recommend them highly enough and you owe it to you, your friends and family to get thumbing through them.
