5.0 out of 5 stars The Art of War, 9 Dec 2008
A truly wonderful book bringing home the stark realism of the conditions in which the Afghanistan war is being fought. The stunning portraits of the soldiers returning from the front line stand as a tribute to their arduous work in exhausting circumstances. Robert Wilson's photographs of the living quarters, the landscape and the repatriation service bring details to the page that are beautifully artistic whilst showing the basic tools of life in such a vulnerable situation. A truly magnificent record of today's war.

4.0 out of 5 stars A picture paints a thousand words, 2 Jan 2009
By Mr. H. F. Murden (New Barnet, Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Invited to record the lives of some of the British 52 Brigade's troops deployed to Helmand province in Afghanistan, Robert Wilson has captured some stunning images within the pages of this book.

The portraits of the British soldiers and Afghan natives are truly mesmerising, the harsh realities of their respective existences etched into their faces - superb. My only criticism is that there are not more photos like the selection of aerial shots at the start of the book showing the breathtakingly rugged scenery of this part of the world.

Overall a very striking photographic collection. Recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Paper It's Printed On, 16 Feb 2009
What a disappointing book! While the photos are technically spot on, and the portraits very good ( Wilson is known for his portraits) this book is not worth the paper it's printed on. The majority of the shots of the living quarters are devoid of people, and each location has been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, with little character in them. There are very few shots of Afghans and even fewer of patrolling soldiers and locals, which makes me think that Wilson never went on the ground with the soldiers and that all the shots were taken from inside the comfort zone of the Patrol Bases. While the portraits are very good, they all depict the soldiers with dust covered faces looking exhausted. There are no shots of soldiers happy to have returned from patrol, happy to have survived the day. None of soldiers preparing to go out, very few of soldiers showing their sense of humour and making the most of where they are.

If these comments seem unduly harsh, my thoughts are slightly more complicated than the average reviewer. I returned from my second tour to Afghanistan last summer and have been to a lot of places depicted in the book. As someone who has been there and seen it for myself, this book doesn't show what the people or places were like.
