I am reading this book daily and comparing it with my Australian bird books. It is indeed a GEM of a book. The depth of detail and cross referencing is amazing. It is a great work of intellectual endeavour.

Latin bird names explained very clearly!

This book is a must if you are a scientific names enthusiast. The meanings of all scientific names (about 20,000) of all the bird species in the world are given in this wonderful dictionary. This is the second edition of the highly acclaimed "Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names", published in 1991. The first edition is long out of print, and this second edition, published 2010, is a better replacement because it is enlarged and includes all the scientific bird names in literature up to about the last quarter of 2009. I find this book very interesting when you want to know the meaning of a scientific name.
