By Greg
I wanted to like the Charger. After all, it's a HH baselayer, which I've always liked, but with a higher neck and zip for some temperature control. The HH crew baselayers can leave you with an uncomfortably cold back of the neck in very cold conditions if your neckwarmer or scarf moves.
I ordered a charger and a new Lifa Dry crew at the same time. Compared to older Helly Hansen Lifa Dry tops, they've redesigned the sleeves to be much looser, so the fit isn't as snug on my skinny arms. This didn't really seem to affect performance though, and did mean that at the end of a days skiing, you can actually roll the sleeves up in the bar. The redesigned cuffs make this possible too.

The fatal flaw... The big problem is the length. The charger is at least 4 inches shorter in the body length than the crew. Why would they do this? It meant that whilst skiing and snowboarding, my layers were always separating, especially after a fall, and always resulted in snow getting where it shouldn't. Even wearing the excellent HH boxers, which had a high waist, didn't cure the problem.
I'm just glad I bought the olive green one for a knockdown price.
My recommendation - save your money and get a standard Helly Hansen Lifa Dry Crew.

Do not normally review items, but felt I had to in this case as a warning to others. Other Lifa tops I have are in a Large size, and are, if anything slightly too big. That's OK as I do not like them to be ultra-tight (shows off the belly too much). They are slightly long in the arms, and have a great back length which does not ride up when cycling. Not so the Charger. I bought an Extra Large as I had heard they might be slightly smaller. When it arrived it was barely big enough. Just about OK in the arms, but the back length was pitiful. For cycling, and presumably other active sport like skiing, absolutely useless - unless you wear another base layer as well, which pretty much defeats the object. So, if you are set on a zip at the neck, buy one at least two sizes bigger than normal or just don't bother. Me, I will not be bothering again, and will go back to the normal Lifa tops. Feels like Helly are skimping on materials to shave a bit more profit. Expected better from them. This review does not reflect on the service from Amazon and the supplier of the top, which was as I ordered and prompt.

Great ski top 27 Jan 2010
My husband purchased one of these last year and found it so good that I bought him another. The top is quite close fitting and although he generally takes a Large size (42 -44 chest)- he needed the XL size in this top. He is 6ft and it fitted him well, tucking into his salopettes. The zip neck allowed him to let air in or keep it out as needed and was comfortable around his neck (16 and 1/2 inch collar size). The top is a base layer and surprisingly thin, considering how warm it is. He also found that it kept him dry and comfortable with any sweat being wicked away. It's suitable to wear as a general top and doesn't look as though you are wearing a vest/base layer. Some days this was the only top he needed to wear under his ski suit, but if it was really cold he did need to put on an additional layer. The top is very lightweight, so great when trying to keep the weight of your suitcase down. It is also very easy to wash out and dries overnight on the radiator, which is really convenient. Be careful not to get it too near any velcro fasteners as they catch on the material.
