Book Description

Environmental disaster, war, and government dissolution have plunged the outside world into chaos, leaving the embattled polygamist community of Blister Creek facing a host of dire challenges as their lifesaving resources grow treacherously low. When one of their beloved members gets lost in the desert, Dr. Jacob Christianson agrees to send out an expedition that includes his sister, Eliza. But danger follows the search group, literally: nefarious armed drones hover overhead, ready to strike the rescuers at a moment’s notice.

Greater troubles soon arise for Jacob and his followers. Refugees from a now-defunct government camp in Utah are making their way to the compound, demanding food and supplies from the community of dedicated believers. This is the end-of-the-world scenario that Jacob and the rest of Blister Creek’s denizens prepared for—and feared more than anything. Now, Jacob’s faith will be tested as he decides between doing what is right…and what is necessary to survive.

    More About the Author

I've trekked across the Sahara on a camel, ridden an elephant through a tiger preserve in Southeast Asia, eaten fried guinea pig, and been licked on the head by a skunk. In a previous stage of life I programmed nuclear war simulations, smuggled refugees out of a war zone, and milked cobras for their venom. I speak Spanish and French and grew up in a religious community in the desert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic read 8 Oct. 2014

Having just read the previous six books again in anticipation of this being published I was overjoyed that the latest book Hell's Fortress continued the strong writing, characters and storyline Michael Wallace has delivered throughout. Once again the storyline grips the reader and each strand pulls together to make a brilliant book.
It is populated by richly thought out characters with whom the reader becomes invested.
On one hand I cannot wait until the final book of the series on the other I do not want it to stop. I would recommend Michael Wallace's books to everyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Post apocalypse thriller with religion 12 Oct. 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition
Post apocalypse thriller, but not your normal one, this is by the grace of God. In a world ripped apart by a mega volcanic eruption a religious cult in southern Utah, USA tries to defend their town and survive. You would expect a religious group would be welcoming and helpful, not this one. The story quickly splits in two with Eliza and companions seeking to rescue her fiancée Steve in LA, with her father Jacob Blister Creek's leader organising the defence. The author clearly illustrates how far people will go to survive regardless of religion or creed. It is an entertaining read however a little irritating with continual referencing to their religious beliefs and lifestyle which I find totally alien.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to the previous volumes! 7 Oct. 2014
    By L. M. Ironside - Published on
    Format:Kindle Edition
Hell's Fortress is a killer installation in the gripping RIGHTEOUS series. I ripped through the series (never expected to like a single thriller, let alone to get caught up in an entire series) and had a long wait for this new volume, but Hell's Fortress delivers!

Outside of Blister Creek, the world is going to pot as the natural disaster that rocked the planet in Book 6 continues to make its effects felt. War erupts and the corrupt government tightens the screws on Blister Creek, who, as end-of-days believers, *had* set aside a nice stockpile of supplies to see their community through almost any disaster. However, things get desperate as their resources are torn from their hands, and many of the characters, especially Jacob, face tough moral dilemmas as the pressure builds.

It's an extremely believable (and, in that respect, very scary) scenario -- it's unsettling to watch society fall apart, and to see good characters contemplate terrible decisions in an ultimate-survival setting.

All the features you've come to know and love in Michael Wallace's writing are here in spades: excellent prose that never bogs down the tense plot, believable scenarios, and characters who feel real, familiar, and human.

One of the things I love so much about the Righteous series is the strong female characters. So many books I've read in this genre and similar genres have cardboard-cutout women, whose most important feature seems to be their hotness and who are somehow capable of ridiculous feats of asskickery that no believable person could ever achieve. It gives the impression that women in thrillers are nothing more than Barbie dolls taped to ninja throwing stars.

That's not the case with Wallace's characters. The women feel just as well-rounded as the men, but they still get to be action superstars in ways that don't clash with their personalities, their past experiences, or their philosophies. All the women in the series are wonderful, but Eliza has always been my favorite, and in Hell's Fortress she really gets a chance to be a true heroine. (Not that she hasn't done it before. We all remember THE ICEBERG LETTUCE.)

All in all, this was a great read. Fans of the series will stand up and cheer, and we'll all be holding our breath until the final book drops in January. (Meanwhile, I'm going to read the entire series over again...)

*I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hell's Fortress... fantastic book, amazing series! (from an avowed series-hater) 7 Oct. 2014
    By Lauren - Published on
    Format:Kindle Edition
I was thrilled to get my hands on this book (OK, technically it's on my Kindle...) the 7th (and next-to-last) in the “Righteous” series, by Michael Wallace, having read all of the others... each one making me wish that the next in the series would be released IMMEDIATELY! While it wasn't quite that quickly, the wait is always worth it with these books. (I'm not normally a 'series' reader, in fact I usually grumble about them, not liking to have to keep buying another book to find out what happens, but this series grabbed my interest right from the start, and I became hopelessly addicted...)

Michael Wallace has a fantastic writing style, which keeps you absorbed from beginning to end, with just the right balance of suspense, drama, detail, character development, and an ongoing story that brings together a wide assortment of personalities, forced to deal with almost unthinkable (but so very possible) realities... In this case, a group of LDS fundamentalists (polygamy included), reluctantly led by Dr. Jacob Christianson, hunkered down in their valley in the desert, prepared to wait out the end of civilization and their long-awaited salvation and eternal reward. But things don't always go quite as smoothly as they hope, and they are forced to face some problems they didn't plan for... like the USDA confiscating the grains and other resources they have set aside to feed their families in the last days, squatters threatening their water supply, drones keeping tabs on their every move, even invaders coming at them with heavy-duty military weapons. And in the midst of all the chaos around them, Jacob's sister Eliza decides she has to leave the valley to go looking for her beloved, Steve Krantz, who is “out there” somewhere in the chaos and war-zone-like USA.

The inter-weaved story-lines make this an exciting and engrossing read, and the by-now familiar and loved characters make you hope for the best for all of them... even in their bleak circumstances. The struggles and decisions that Jacob is facing are beyond difficult – nearly impossible, but he and his extended family are determined to survive whatever comes next...

Fantastic book, and once again, I can't wait for the next one! (Fortunately, it looks like the wait won't be too long this time, with the next book scheduled for release in January – Yay!) I highly recommend this entire series – even for those who, like me, aren't so crazy about series! This one is well worth the investment! With this series (and several other fantastic titles), Michael Wallace has become one of my favorite authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saga continues with another fabulous book! 7 Oct. 2014
By Kristie Leigh Maguire - Published on
    Format:Kindle Edition
I received a review copy of this book.

I have been a fan of the Righteous Series since the very first book (The Righteous). Michael Wallace’s writing has a way of grabbing a person by the throat and not letting go until the last page is read. Even then one finds themselves eagerly awaiting the release of the next book. Hell’s Fortress does not disappoint Michael Wallace’s fans and readers of this series.

The ongoing saga of the fundamentalist Mormons at Blister Creek continues as they face environmental disasters, wars, and famine. Billions of people have died world-wide. Jacob Christiansen, as his people’s Prophet, orders the mass killing of outside survivors who try to take over Blister Creek but struggles with the decisions he is forced to make because he is a doctor dedicated to healing people instead of killing them. However, end times call for drastic measures in order to keep the valley safe for his people.

I anxiously await the next and final (?) book in this series to see how it all ends. Thank you, Michael, for another great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars The end is near! 7 Oct. 2014
    By Beary - Published on

Not only for the world but for Michael Wallace’s Righteous series. I had the privilege to read an advance copy of the latest book in the series and again he doesn’t disappoint.

Jacob and Blister Creek have been surviving the environmental disasters, governments dissolving, and war going on around the world. It has even come to their closest neighbors in Utah.

The group is faced with life and death decisions that will have far-reaching affects.

Will the Blister Creek group share their food and fuel with refugees arriving at their doors?
What of the land surrounding their home, will they allow people to build tent cities in the forests?
Eliza leads an expedition, trying to search for a member of their organization, will she return?

Read Hell’s Fortress to answer these questions and more…

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific continuation of the series, but read previous books first 29 Nov. 2014

Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a trly amazing series. It may have more appeal to those familiar with the Mormon faith, but I as a non-Mormon am deeply engrossed in the series, and this is definitely a must for those who have been reading the earlier books. However, it most definitely is not a stand-alone book and I strongly advise starting it from its beginning, or near it like maybe the 2nd or 3rd book, if not the first. However, in this 7th books, there are simply too many threads that are difficult to follow if you haven't been keeping up pretty closely by having read at least two of three of the earlier books if not all.
